Buttercup was originally adopted in 2017 and re-adopted in 2018 when her adopter decided the neighbors were a better fit. Fast forward and the neighbors elderly geldings both crossed the Rainbow Bridge, leaving Buttercup alone and mourning. Stressed, lonely, and heartbroken, she dropped a tremendous amount of weight and became nearly untouchable for lack of handling.
Luckily, the adopters reached out for help, and under our lifetime safety net, Buttercup returned to us. As of April, 2024, Buttercup's veterinary and farrier care are up to date. She is cleared for refresher training, which has begun in her foster home and will continue with a professional later in 2024. *All images are from 2017. Current photos and some video clips can be found on our Facebook page, documenting Buttercup's progress.
Buttercup is fairly straightforward to handle, but she does look for a quiet confidence in her handler. We anticipate her best match in an adopter will be a petite, low-drama horsewoman with solid skills.
We would consider a foster-to-adopt situation with an experienced rider or trainer. This is a 60-day "trial" training period in which Safe Harbor covers basic care costs.
If you would like to be "first in line" when she is cleared for adoption, or if you are interested in the foster-to-adopt program, please visit safeharborhorses.org and complete an adoption application.
** Inquires via shared sites will not be answered. As a foster-based organization, our adoption process requires a completed and approved application prior to meeting horses, out of respect for everyone's time and privacy. An in-person meeting is required. Answers to frequently asked questions are on our website. Thank you for your understanding. **
If you would like to sponsor Buttercup's training or ongoing care, please visit https://www.safeharborhorses.org/donations or via PayPal using contact@safeharborsanctuary.org.
