My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Floyd!

Playful Snuggly Affectionate Sweetheart

Hi, I'm Floyd, a young Great Dane with a heart as big as my paws! I might be a little shy when I meet new people, go to new places, or encounter new dogs, but don't let that fool you—I'm also very curious and eager to explore the world around me. Once I warm up, I’m just a big, gentle giant who loves to snuggle right up on your lap, even if I don’t quite fit!

I absolutely adore my people and will climb onto your bed or chair just to get some hugs and scratches. I’m playful with other dogs, especially the ones I know well, but I can be a bit timid around new ones. I’m very affectionate, and when I know you, I’ll shower you with hugs and kisses.

New situations make me a little nervous, so I prefer slower introductions. Large groups of new people can make me freeze or want to run the other way, but once I feel safe, I’m all about the cuddles. With the help of my foster family, I continue to improve in these situations.

When it comes to kids, I’m curious and love to sniff and check them out, but I usually just ignore them after that. I can be a bit clumsy and floppy when I play, so it's best if kids aren’t in the room during my zoomie sessions. If the kids are high-energy, I might get a little too excited and feed off that energy. I do well playing with familiar dogs and love a good chase or some rowdy play. I don’t have experience with cats, so slow and structured introductions will be necessary.

I am housebroken but may be a bit reluctant to go outside if it is stormy. I have been doing well with free roam - although I've been caught counter-surfing a few times - oops! I do best when left alone in a familiar room where I feel comfy and secure.

My foster family says I’m the sweetest puppy you’ll ever meet. I love to chew on toys, especially cow bones, and I’m very gentle when taking things out of your hand. I also love puzzle toys and playing chase with my foster dog sibling. My favorite thing, though, is cuddling up with my people and snoozing on the couch.

I’m in good health with no concerns! I may get anxious if left alone for long periods of time. I would do best if given some Trazodone if my family is going to be away for a while, but otherwise, I am ok. I would prefer a forever family who will be home more often than not and who won’t leave me alone for long periods. Someone who works from home would be ideal for me.

I’m learning commands like "no," "lay down," "out," "in," and "come," though I sometimes confuse "sit" with "lay down." I catch on quickly when reinforced with treats.

My forever family must have a physical fence and preferably a mid-size to large yard where I can play safely. I also need to have a canine friend to play with in my forever home.

I’m a smart, loving, and gentle boy who is looking to be the best companion ever. If you’re looking for a giant lap dog who loves to give wet kisses and snuggles, I’m your guy!

Floyd is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog who will flourish into a confident and loving companion with some continued support from his forever family. If you’re looking for a giant lap dog who will fill your home with love and wet kisses, Floyd is the perfect match for you. To make Floyd a part of your family, please reach out to us by following one of the options below.

Please note that his adoption contract will have a neuter clause agreement requiring the adopter to agree to neuter him at 10 months of age. His adopter may choose to take his to a UMGDR-approved veterinary clinic where the rescue will pay for the neuter.  If the adopter prefers to use a non-UMGDR clinic, the rescue will reimburse $150 of the cost after the surgery is complete.

1. If you have already completed the adoption or foster application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Floyd’s Placement Coordinator at michelle@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about him.

2. If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you can be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Please visit https://www.thegreatdanerescue.com/adoption-application to complete an application and submit your $25 application fee to begin the process. More about this rescue

Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue was started in 2008 by a group of Dane lovers who desire to help Danes in need. The rescue is made up of all volunteers who lovingly give of their time and money to help these wonderful dogs. Volunteers include people from every walk of life, all with one thing in common, love of Great Danes.

Each animal coming to the rescue is temperament tested, given a physical, vaccinated, wormed, checked for heartworm and tick borne illnesses and treated as needed. All dogs are sterilized before being re homed. The dog is then placed in a foster home to wait for someone to love it forever.
