My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Hallie, a sweet and loving 3-year-old hound mix searching for her new family! With her soulful eyes and wagging tail, Hallie is a bundle of joy who will instantly steal your heart. She's a gentle soul who loves to snuggle up on the couch, go for long walks, and soak up all the belly rubs she can get. Hallie enjoys playtime in our play yards, where she can stretch her legs and explore. While Hallie hasn't met any other dog friends at LHS yet, we think she would love a dog friend at home and would love to meet your resident pups.

Hallie is eager to please, quick to learn, and would thrive in a home that offers her love, attention, and a cozy spot to call her own. Hallie is ready to start her next chapter with a family who will cherish her as much as she will cherish them. Could Hallie be the perfect addition to your home? Come meet her and find out!

*Adoption fees vary

The process is simple; come in and visit with the pet you are interested in, and we will talk with you to see if it is a good match. Please bring with you a photo ID, and you are welcome to bring in your dog to do an introduction with your new pet. If the pet is not spayed or neutered, we will schedule their appointment for our next available transport day to the spay/neuter clinic.

We have dedicated volunteers and staff who can help you choose the right match for your family. Just ask for assistance, let us know what your needs are and we can help you find your next friend.

Placing an animal on ‘hold’: we want your adoption experience to be as pleasant and stress-free as possible. We allow potential adopters to place holds on pets so that they can take their time making adoption decisions, introduce family members and other pets. Holds may be placed over the phone, email or in person, and in the case of a “tie”, the individual physically visiting the shelter and the animal will be awarded the first hold on the pet.

1st hold: $30 per 24 hours
2nd hold and beyond: $15

Hold fees are non-refundable and are not applied towards the adoption fee.

More about this shelter

For over fifty years, the LHS has operated as a private, non-profit organization, caring for lost and homeless pets. Last year, we cared for 3,981 pets and 96% of the pets went to new or existing homes. We are a No Kill Humane Society and a 501c3. By operating the public shelter for the City of Lynchburg and Appomattox County, we accept the stray or unwanted pets surrendered to us from those communities. We also have developed a more regional/state level focus. In 2016 we helped 602 pets from other public shelters that otherwise may have had a negative outcome. We accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. We firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. Along with our Center for Pets we also have a regional spay/neuter clinic located in Evington, VA. The spay/neuter clinic serves Lynchburg, Campbell, Nelson, Rockbridge, Appomattox, Bedford and Amherst Counties. It is the help of the community that makes our life-saving programs possible.

Mission: Help pets in need thru sheltering, adoption, education, spay/neuter and community outreach.

Vision: A community free of homeless and neglected pets.
