Our adoption process works by allowing potential adopters to work directly with the animal's rescuer to decide if it is a good match! You can find the rescuer's contact information in the animal's adoption listing. Defensa Animal de Puerto Rico is a Puerto Rico-based nonprofit working to help the dogs, cats and horses on the island by:

- Lowering the number of dogs, cats and horses that are injured, un-owned or neglected by providing adoption marketing and financial assistance for vet services
- Increasing the rate of sterilization of all cats and dogs and castration of stallions/horses
- Taking in, rehabilitating and rehoming unwanted, injured or abandoned horses

For dogs, cats, pigs, birds, etc., Defensa relies on foster homes. For horse rescue, Defensa utilizes donated land.
