My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Nero, a magnificent 2.5 year-old male German Shepherd in search of his forever home. This handsome boy, a purebred from the Czech Republic, boasts a striking  black coat that gleams in the sunlight. Nero is a large, powerful dog in his prime, with a heart to match his impressive stature, eager to find a family he can shower with love and protection.

At his young adult age, Nero has the perfect blend of youthful energy and emerging maturity. His personality is a delightful mix of sweetness and playfulness, typical of a shepherd entering his prime years. He thrives on human companionship, always eager to be by your side and partake in family activities. His affectionate nature truly shines once he's comfortable, rewarding his chosen person with unwavering loyalty and a breathtaking smile that will melt your heart. Nero isn't shy about expressing himself either – expect some endearing whines and vocalizations as he communicates his love for you.

While Nero likes other dogs, he can be a bit selective on their personalities. He could do well in a home with another dog if they're compatible. He should not be with cats, though.

Despite his young age, Nero has already mastered some important skills that will make his transition to a new home smoother. He's crate-trained, walks nicely on a leash, and is even muzzle-trained for situations that might require it.

Nero needs an experienced owner who understands the breed and can provide consistent training and guidance.  He has the protective instincts of a typical German Shepherd, and potential adopters should be willing to work with a reactive dog.  Nero needs a patient owner who can help him navigate new experiences and continue his training to ensure he becomes the best version of himself.

The ideal home for Nero would be with adults only, preferably with previous German Shepherd experience. He needs a family who understands his need for mental and physical stimulation, as well as his protective nature.

If you're ready to welcome a loyal, loving companion into your life and are prepared for the responsibility of owning a large, intelligent breed in his prime years, Nero might be the perfect match for you. Are you ready to give this handsome boy the loving forever home he deserves and grow together for years to come?

More about this rescue

Rescue, Retrain, Redeem, and Re-home.
Redemption Road Rescue Rehab Inc (aka R4) is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization based in Lake County, Illinois. R4 functions as an all-breed and ages, dog and cat rescue that specializes in behavioral training and rehabilitation. We are a professionally operated nonprofit dog and cat rescue run by certified dog trainers. We believe the solution to “difficult” animals cannot just be euthanasia. Our mission is to place dogs and cats that have undergone our rehabilitation program with responsible, reliable, and devoted owners. Our training specialty is centered in dog behaviors and understanding the canine mind. We take in all breeds, all ages and work with domesticated felines and feral cat colonies as well. Our expectations of adopters: 1- Consider the animal as an individual with their own personality and behaviors. 2- Be willing to learn, ask questions, and implement training into their daily routine. 3- Work alongside our team to prepare their home to provide the best environment for their new family member. R4 is 100% volunteer-run and foster-based and relies on donations, fundraisers, grants, and sponsorships to allow our organization to fulfill our mission to animals in need.
