Count von Count came to CVHS when someone found him as a stray, and wasn't able to locate his owner.
He's familiar with being with other felines, who were also strays, and liked having access to being outdoors. For an initial period of time, he was cautious but curious in his colony room. He would watch his feline friends greet staff and volunteers, before he would make his appearance.
Over time, staff made the observation that Count von Count had an odd gait, and walked differently than normal. A radiologist was able to diagnose that Count had an abnormal femoral head and osteoarthritis all on one side. The best course of action was to amputate his leg, making sure he was finally pain free. Since the painful leg was taken, there is no follow-up care needed. Being a tripod kitty didn't take him too long to adjust to. He's using a litterbox (not covered) just fine, and is back in a cat colony room.
We have observed that Count is greeting us with more confidence than ever, and is loving attention. He is living with a different, more relaxed group of feline friends in the colony room this time, and is also doing great with them. We don't know how he would be with a dog in his next home, but it would definitely need to be a canine who has prior cat experience, and would have no desire to chase Count. With Counts personality, respectful kids should be just fine.
