My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gus is a gorgeous stocky boy who has light gentle eyes that only get brighter in the sunlight showing off his good looks. Asparagus came to players from a hoarding situation that broke our hearts, but certainly not his! This boy is a daily dose of dopamine every day always so happy to please his people.

Asparagus has tested really well with other dogs, at first meet he really wants to get only the best sniffs in and can be a little invasive but not in a bad way! He just wants to greet his new friends and find out everything he can about them. He previously lived with a golden retriever and has done well in group play. Asparagus is very gentle with cats and even tried to initiate play in his foster home with the resident cat. Asparagus has meet a few kids and really loved them a whole lot! We think he would do best with kids over 10 to be sure he doesn't knock anyone over on accident as he does not really know how strong he is.

Asparagus has a pretty moderate energy level and could do some exercise or just hang for the day. He is not a hard guy to please and is happy to take an afternoon nap after a good walk or some ball play. Asparagus does have a really nice "sit" and is currently learning his "down" and "place" command!

Asparagus is making improvements in the crate but that is really his only downfall. When he has the most basic structure in the home and stays on a solid routine, he is the easiest dog in the whole world!

Asparagus is eager to please and just wants to go for daily car rides, walks, or lounge around with his humans! He is more than willing to share his love with furry friends in the home and absolutely loves cuddles and pets. He has made big strides in the crate during his time in the rescue, given his past he seems to think he will be in the crate for a really long time once placed. Overall, he is quiet if crated at any point during the day but struggles at night when he knows all are home.

Asparagus has the funniest run ever! He loves to take big strides and bunny hop half way through his steps making anyone who sees it smile. Now you may be thinking "When does he do that?" that's the kicker, its every time he runs! That's just how he runs. This goofball has so much love to give and so much joy to spread.

Three words to describe Asparagus? Awkward, Goofy, and Pure! Looking for a playful cuddle bug to complete your home? More about this rescue

Players for Pits is a 501c3, non profit rescue that connects professional athletes to the community in order to come together to take a stand against the abuse and neglect of animals. PFP serves the western suburbs of Chicago and is a foster based rescue, so the dogs in our care are in foster homes learning the basics of being a well balanced dog versus being in cages at loud boarding facilities.

The athletes involved in our rescue actively support the rescue efforts and help by spreading the word of dogs in need. It is the mission of Players for Pits to educate dog owners about proper pet care - both physical and mental - so that the dogs in our care can be happy, well balanced members of society. It is our goal to rescue dogs from high kill shelters and place them into loving homes in the suburbs. At Players for Pits we stand up for pit bulls, who's character is routinely tarnished and often misrepresented. We recognize the pit bull for what it is: a DOG. And any dog with the right care and owners can be a wonderful pet. While we are an advocate for pit bulls, we do not discriminate based on breed and will take in other breeds if they need you help. Players for Pits is also very active in the community and we co-host clinics to help struggling families maintain their pets health, we train pit bull type dogs to become therapy dogs for children with abusive backgrounds, and we try to involve the community in our goal to reduce pet abandonment.
