Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Sterling (and Sawyer)
In rescue there is great joy and great heartache… and sometimes these two emotions come with the same story. Two years ago Sterling and Sawyer were adopted together as kittens. We were overjoyed at their good fortune. The brothers loved each other and their hooman mama. She took great care of them and they were happy cats. Sadly, their mama died recently. Her caregiver took care of the boys after their mama passed but is unable to keep them. Thankfully, she called us to see if we could take them back. Of course we will! Once a Smithgall family member always a Smithgall family member.
The boys took a while to decompress but are now showing us the sunny personality we remember from when they were kittens. They are both on the larger side, and Sterling is the biggest of the two, and definitely has the most confidence. Sterling has come out of his safe hiding spot and welcomes any attention he can get. He gives sweet kitty hugs and tries to curl up on your shoulder. He's always the first to greet guests to the community cat room and jump into a willing lap (followed very closely by his brother Sawyer). We can tell he and his brother are going to be wonderful family members. These big, beautiful boys (almost identical twins) are being so brave and have everyone charmed. We will continue to love them but we hope someone will see their story and apply to give them a loving home. We would love them to go home together but they have shown an Independence that makes us think they will do just fine separated if that means they go to a loving home. Sterling and Sawyer will transition easily into a new home once they feel loved. If you love big, warm cuddle bugs on a cold winter day, Sterling is just the cat for you. If you’re able to give Sterling (and maybe Sawyer) a loving furever home, please submit a cat application from our website www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org
Please call our shelter at 706-865-4135 or email us at smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net to verify that we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.
Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are either owner relinquished rescued from area Animal Controls or high kill shelters. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.

Resident animals are either owner relinquished rescued from area Animal Controls or high kill shelters. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.
Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.
