Tater Tot is an adorable wiggle-worm of a pup who loves to run and play with other small dogs as much as he loves to climb into volunteers’ laps for cuddles and kisses. And cheese. Big cheese fan over here. He can be shy when meeting new people but once he knows someone, he is all love. He would do well in a home with a playful doggie sibling to show him the ropes.
He recently went on an outing to the Alameda waterfront with a volunteer, who reported: “Tater Tot was a little tentative at first but after we walked for a bit, he became more curious about his surroundings and taking in the sights and smells. He showed good progress on his leash walking skills. He did not react to passing dogs or birds, didn’t blink an eye at bicycles or people walking by 10-15 feet away. He did get excited by a squirrel or two, pulling on the leash toward them, but did not bark and was easily redirected. As we walked, he checked in with me regularly, asking for pets or treats, and whenever we took a break, he hopped into my lap for some cuddles. He also accepted treats and gentle pets from a new friend. Tater Tot is a very affectionate boy with a lot of love to give!”
On a second outing for a hike in Tilden Park, Tater Tot energetically hiked 3+ miles on leash and did great passing other dogs both on and off leash on trail, checking in regularly and not reacting to passing dogs. He was friendly with the dog-savvy 10-year-old kid on the hike, enjoying pets and gently taking treats from her. In the car on the way back, he snuggled with the kid in the back seat while in his car harness, both of them showing big smiles. On an ice cream stop, he sat contentedly on a bench next to the volunteer and accepted pets, patiently waiting and not begging while they ate their snack. He was an ideal al fresco dining companion!
