My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gambit: The Charming Cajun of Canines Ain’t no ordinary dog, chér! Gambit, a 4-year-old (born ~2020) Golden Retriever/Lab Mix, is a true heart-stealer with his laid-back Southern charm and a playful streak that’ll light up your life. Just like Remy LaBeau from the X-Men series, Gambit’s got a smooth style and a personality as colorful as Mardi Gras. Whether he's playin' fetch or flashin' that dazzling smile, this boy will be your new favorite partner-in-crime! Gambit’s not all show—he’s house-trained, crate-trained, and knows his commands like a pro. Sit, shake, spin? He’s got it all down, even throws in a kiss for good measure! And let me tell you, this boy kennels so well, you’d swear he’s lived in a palace of cards. He’s not just good with commands either—he’s the perfect watchdog, barking only to let you know when someone’s comin’ round the bend. He’s friendly with strangers, kids, and other dogs, but like his X-Men counterpart, Gambit might prefer to charm the adults in the room with his cool, calm demeanor.

Now, Gambit does have one small weakness, much like the Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine—cars. They make him a bit nervous, but with a lil' patience and love, that’s nothin’ this resilient pup can’t overcome. In his own words (if he could talk, of course): “Mon ami, just get me on solid ground, and I’ll be good as gold.” Gambit would love a home with a fenced yard where he can run, play, and perfect his "Cajun two-step" spin move! This pup thrives with a partner by his side, so if you’re home most of the time, you’ve found your new best friend."Life- it ain't all gumbo and sweet potato pie," but with Gambit, it'll be pretty close! If you’re looking for a loyal, sweet, and charismatic companion to light up your life like a firework on Bourbon Street, Gambit is ready to bring a little Cajun flair to your home. Come meet Gambit, and just like that charged-up card, he’ll be the best thing you ever caught!

The suggested adoption donation for Gambit is $375, which includes a lifetime of free relationship-based training for any behavioral problems (not obedience training). Muddy Paws is a 501c3 non-profit organization meaning that part of your donation MAY be TAX DEDUCTIBLE. We are a 100% volunteer rescue committed to giving animals a second chance at life. All donations go toward that mission. Adoption fees are the primary source of funding for the cost of veterinary care for our animals. In 2022 alone, we provided animal Healthcare totaling over $399,000 covered mainly through adoption fees.

Please Note: A Courtesy Post designates that an animal is still in the home of its owner and not in a Muddy Paws foster. This means that our exposure to the animal is limited since we only assist the owner in finding a new home for their pet. From time to time, owners find a new forever home for their pets outside of Muddy Paws Last Chance Rescue, and there is a delay in removing them from our site. We apologize if the Courtesy Post you apply to adopt is unavailable for adoption.

Information about the adoption process: All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION. Once your application has completed our prescreen steps, we will put you in touch with the animal’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match. If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the animal. The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver.

Please Note: We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter. We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks, and a Home Visit (Virtual in some cases) during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each animal, based on the animal’s needs. If you and the animal are not a good match, we will help you select another animal, or we will keep your approved application on file for 6 months.

More about this rescue

Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue, Inc. is a not for profit organization formed in 2014 by a small group of devoted animal lovers, in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area, with many years of rescue experience wanting to make a difference in the lives of dogs. Our rescue focuses on small breed dogs, less than 35 pounds, of any age. It is all volunteer based, and all of our rescue dogs are living in the homes of our volunteers.
Our rescue is unique in that we offer supportive services, such as education and training, to owners considering relinquishing their pet in an effort to try to keep the dog in their home whenever possible. We also educate and offer placement assistance to owners attempting to rehome their pets through social media sites, which can often be risky for the pets as well as the owners.
