My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*Opal is currently not living at the shelter but still available for adoption, so please email asoanimaladoption@austintexas.gov for next steps if you are interested in meeting her!*

Meet Opal, the Gem of Your Life!

Opal is a cattle dog with a heart full of love and a bit of extra sparkle! This beautiful girl may have a hearing impairment, but that doesn’t stop her from being the brightest pup around. In fact, she`s already mastered the art of communication through her soulful eyes, tail wags, and cuddly snuggles. Opal has a sixth sense for love and comfort.

Because Opal’s hearing isn’t perfect, she’ll need a patient and understanding human who’s willing to work with her on learning new skills. Whether it’s using hand signals, visual cues, or simply being her encouraging cheerleader, she’ll thrive in a home with someone willing to help her shine. The effort will be more than worth it - Opal is ready to give you her whole heart.

We are still learning about Opal’s desire to share the spotlight, and she might prefer to be the only pet in your life. That said, with slow and careful introductions, she could potentially get along with a well-matched, canine companion who respects her boundaries. Opal appreciates her space and prefers to take her time getting to know new furry friends, so a patient, understanding approach will be key. Either way, she’s ready to fill your home with love, whether it’s just for you or another buddy too. A meet and greet with your resident pet can be scheduled by emailing the behavior team at Animal.Behavior@austintexas.gov.

Are you ready to bring this gem into your life? Opal is waiting to find her forever human, and she promises to be all ears (well, sort of) when it comes to loving you!

Opal comes with training support courtesy of Friends of AAC to help you transition to a hearing-impaired dog.

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
