My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Pennington County Humane Society

Dally from a few weeks back with the severe neck injury? Well, he is healed-up! He would love to have a home; here is an update from his fabulous foster!
Meet Dally!***Currently being fostered *** Appointment is needed for the meet and greet!
He is a German Shepherd mix that is approximately 10 months old. He is going to be neutered on August 19th.
Dally is a very sweet dog that had a hard start. He was found with a severe injury caused by an elastic band grown into his neck. Even though he has been healing well, he has a large amount of scar tissue near his throat. His trachea was also affected due to this, he can only wear harnesses to keep pressure off his neck. His veterinarian is requiring him to only eat soft food long term to make swallowing more comfortable. The coughing due to his injury is now minimal. He has been taking several short walks a day to help build his stamina. He is also currently on a 28-day course of doxycycline due to testing positive for Lyme disease, and he is still trying to gain weight. At this time, he weighs roughly 50 pounds. His injury has also left him with a very strange bark.
Overall, he is a quiet dog but barks when left alone. He has been crated when home alone because he began to do some chewing.
It took him several days to feel safe inside a house since he lived on the streets. To start, he was fearful of the TV, stairs, hardwood floors, and doorways, but his confidence has grown. The main thing that still scares him indoors is the vacuum cleaner.
Dally is beginning to fit in living inside a home. He has been cheerful around visiting children, playful towards his cat roommate, and has never had a bathroom accident. He also loves to snuggle and has been allowed to sleep on the bed and couches.
Dally has been learning basic commands and how to walk on a leash. He seems to be a fast learner. He walks well but often needs reassurance that he does not need to be afraid of his surroundings. He often freezes when he sees or hears lawnmowers, bikes, people, or other dogs. It is uncertain how he would interact with another dog up close but if he smells another dog's scent when out walking he drools and his lips shake. He does still need to learn that being mouthy is not acceptable.
As he is feeling better his young dog energy is starting to return. He is starting to learn that toys are fun. He would benefit from a fenced yard to burn off his extra energy without the risk of him running from something that scares him. Dally is a happy and delightful dog looking for his forever home.
