My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please read the entire bio for this rescue, it will provide all the information that one needs to decide if they would like to apply to adopt from SCMR.

Adoption fee:  $150.00

Birdie

Surprise! I bet you never expected to find me at SCMR! I'm always excited and zooming around and being goofy! It's just so good to be off the street! I'm 50+ pounds of enthusiastic Coonhound or Birddog puppy...don't know yet! I'm almost a year old so everything is new and exciting to me! And I'm a girl.

I was dumped on Signal Mountain, TN, and got picked up by a Good Samaritan who couldn't keep me. So I was about to get dumped again, but I ended up with this nice lady at SCMR who couldn't let me get re-dumped! She says I'm real smart...have learned Sit and Lie Down. But that word NO is giving me some problems. This place I'm at is pretty small and doesn't have a yard. I sure would love a big fenced yard to run in. That's a must! Hey, I'm real good at Fetch! Anybody got a couple of young boys who would play with me?

And listen to this...I'm house trained! Yep! I know what a pee pad is for. But I'm a nature-girl and really prefer the outdoors for personal business. No chip but I've had all my shots and got spayed, whatever that is! I really, REALLY want a forever family. I'm just bursting with kisses and enthusiasm. Foster mom says I'm a real sweetie when I've worked off some of my energy. She named me Birdie and I like it! I knew right off when she said it that it was my name.

Come and get me! I'm in Chattanooga, TN, tearing up all the plants in her garden and having a blast!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. A PDF version of the application is also available for download. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations depending upon the age of the animal and the medical expenses. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption fee helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal.
We need COMPLETED applications; we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application.

If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it.

PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. We do NOT adopt to homes with children under the age of 10 years or homes with Electric Fences.

Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal).

Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift').

Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'.

When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download from our website, scmradoption.com.

Go meet their pets

Our dogs are in wonderful foster homes, throughout the US, primarily in the southeast.. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit.

We are committed to finding the best home possible for each of our little ones, so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out of state adoptions are possible. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally, all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seatbelt harness for their safety.

FOSTER A PET
Can't adopt? Consider being a FOSTER PARENT. All foster homes undergo the same screening that an adoptive home will. You must be committed to the potential lifetime care of the animals and be responsible for helping select and qualify their forever homes. IF YOU CAN FOSTER, please fill out a FOSTER APPLICATION.

More about this rescue

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family.

We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization so all donations are tax deductible. These little dogs need YOUR help now. SCMR takes in many "extreme-needs" Maltese and our vet bills can be very high. Every little bit helps. Additionally we can always use things such as dog beds, heartworm preventative, flea preventative, harnesses etc. Donations can be made out to SCMR and mailed to:
