My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Chicken Joe. Chicken Joe was brought to the shelter by one of our community members, Chicken Joe was roaming around Encinitas trying to make friends.
Here are a few fun facts about Roosters:
Crowing: Roosters crow to greet the day, lead their flock, alert about predators, and mark boundaries. They usually start crowing just before sunrise.
Biological clock: Roosters have a unique biological clock that tells them when the sun is coming up.
Memory: Roosters have excellent memories and can recognize up to 100 human faces.
Eye movement: Roosters and chickens have rapid eye movement, which means they dream like humans.
Spurs: Rooster spurs grow continuously and harden over time, developing a sharp end as the rooster matures. Roosters use their spurs as weapons to protect their flock and territory.
Keeping the peace: Roosters usually don't fight with hens, and often break up hen fights.
Chicken Joe is ready for his new home, if you would like to meet Chicken Joe come to the Escondido Campus.

More about this shelter

San Diego Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, is creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Our lifesaving safety net has helped San Diego become the largest city in the U.S. to keep healthy and treatable shelter animals from being euthanized. We are a private, independent, nonprofit organization that is not affiliated with any other humane society or society for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

With campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona and San Diego, we provide animal services for 14 cities within San Diego County. We not only care for 50,000 animals in our communities but also share the expertise we have gained through our innovative programs with shelters nationwide so they can save more lives in their communities.

While our influence is expanding nationally, our top priority is meeting the needs of San Diego. We provide exceptional care for all animals through world-class veterinary medicine, shelter and most of all: love.
