My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Say hello to Kahlua! Kahlua just turned one year old in October. He has been through a lot in his little life. He, along with four other dogs, were abandoned in a kennel in a parking lot late at night. All five dogs have made progress with their people socialization, to varying degrees. We feel Kahlua is finally ready to start the search for his forever home, provided they are patient and loving, and willing to give him the time he needs to fully blossom. Kahlua will bark and avoid when first meeting you. If you reach for him too fast, he will nip. Because of this, we feel he needs to go to an adult-only home. We have noticed he tends to bond more with females than males. At rescue, Kahlua is starting to zoom up to those he knows and trusts, seeking out attention and pets. He is becoming more social with the other dogs, and even brave enough to explore the yard! Kahlua did spend about a week in foster, but didn't warm up to the male in the home. He loved the human female though, and showed what a fun and puppy-like personality he can have when he is comfortable. In his foster home, Kahlua discovered the joy of toys (especially flipping them up in the air and dragging them all over the house). He also discovered his own reflection in the mirror (haha) and per his foster mom, "there isn't a reflection of himself he has seen that he doesn't like". He would jump on her for pets and kisses, just like he does for those at rescue whom he knows and trusts. Kahlua will take time and patience to fully get comfortable in a new environment. He will need help with things like potty training and leash training. If you think you have what Kahlua needs to fully blossom, send us an email to chitownrescue@gmail.com. Kahlua is approximately one-year-old, and weighs around 15 pounds. His adoption fee includes neuter surgery, vaccinations up to date, Rabies certificate, and microchip.

More about this rescue

"Chi Town" is short for "Chihuahua Town," which is our nick-name because we found that the majority of animals we were rescuing happened to be Chihuahuas and literally have a little “town” comprised of Chihuahuas! Chihuahuas are one of the most over-bred dogs in Arizona and unfortunately many end up in need of rescue. However, we are not limited to saving just Chihuahas, we do save other breeds dependent on availability of space. Chi Town also specializes in rescuing dogs who require a little extra TLC and are at risk of euthanasia at county shelters. These dogs may not be doing well for a variety of reasons- fear, fear aggression, anxiety, or a medical issue to name a few. These are the dogs that typically have no other outlet and for which time is of the essence . After our dogs are medically cleared and/or their behavioral issues have improved, they are available for adoption.

Please be aware that we do our very best to answer all questions in a timely manner.

We are always seeking to help promote these special Chihuahuas who are too often overlooked in AZ shelters due to the sheer volume of this breed. Please share and like us on Facebook:
