My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lovely Lou is looking for a new family. She is a senior dog with a lot of life in her, she loves going on walks where she can sniff around and feel the cool breeze flapping her big hound ears. Her unique look is a showstopper for fellow walkers! When inside, she loves getting pets, but mostly loves finding a cozy spot on her dog bed or in some blankets to cuddle up and take long naps. An independent girl, she has no problem heading to bed early if she’s had a busy day! At times, you may think Lou is a younger dog as she can get very excited in the backyard and loves to run around and get playful. Lou is housebroken and can paw at the back door or ring a bell on the door when she is ready to be let out. Lou would do best in a home without children and cats. Lou can be with other dogs and has been in a home with other dogs most her life, as well as gone to dog daycare, however has food guarding tendencies so would be best with another dog who is not an alpha. Lou is excited for a peaceful home with a family looking for a new senior companion, could you be the home she is looking for?

Lou is estimated to be eleven years old and 50 lbs. Since we don’t know the dog’s actual genetics, this is just a guess on breed and size when grown.

This is a courtesy listing. If you are interested in meeting sweet Lou please send an email to jess.opheim@gmail.com

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We only adopt out animals to homes within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. Our adoption process begins with the return of our pre-adoption form, available on our website. After reviewing your application a meeting is scheduled between you and the pup, sometimes in the fosters home or at a neutral dog friendly place. If any resident dogs are in your home, it is recommended that the pups meet at this time. After the meeting a home visit is scheduled and if everything goes well with the visit the adoption is finalized at that time. A home visit by one of Safe Hands representatives is REQUIRED prior to finalizing any adoption and we must meet all members of the household where the pup will be living sometime during the adoption process.

Come on out and meet all of our great adoptable pups!! On weekends we have meetings at random locations. See our events page on our website or social media.

More about this rescue

Safe Hands is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization dedicated to saving lives and finding forever homes for stray, abandoned and surrendered dogs in high kill shelters. Of great importance to us is to reduce the stray population and need for healthy animal euthanasia through spay/neuter programs, education, and promotion of respect for the furry creatures that share our lives.

We are a small, no-kill, volunteer run organization. All of our dogs listed are in foster homes waiting to be adopted and because of this, we get to know the dogs' personalities very well and use this information to match them to an appropriate home. We do not have a physical shelter.

This rescue is not funded by public funds nor does it receive many donations so it is dependent on adoption fees to keep operating. We have a great need for foster homes. If you are interested in providing foster care, and live within an hour of the Twin Cities, please e-mail us
Donations ALWAYS needed are: dog crates, puppy pee pads, natures miracle (for pet stain removal), Nutrisource brand puppy and dog food, Lysol disinfecting wipes, paper towels, large clean towels, dog toys, leashes, collars and gas cards to help with our transports.
