Trooper is a special dog, with a special story. He was picked up - injured - by a Sheriff's Deputy and got right in the car with her. When he arrived, he was emaciated and could barely walk or even stand. He went straight to the vet and it was determined he had a shoulder injury and 3 compressed discs in his spine. We thought there may be neurological issues as well. We didn't know if we'd be able to save Trooper and brought him back to the shelter where we spoiled him rotten with the yummiest of food, food puzzles (which he figured out in 2 seconds), and marrow bones....anything we could to make him happy. He began to put a little weight on and be a little more mobile so we took him to a neurologist who examined him and said he did not have those issues and referred us to an orthopedist. That vet strongly felt he may need his right front leg amputated but told us to give him a little while and see if there was improvement - which there was! Trooper not only began to walk, but to run and play!
What happened next is that Trooper began to really love living at the shelter and viewed it as his home. When strangers showed up, he started to bark and act very protective when in his kennel. We have had numerous staff changes and trust me - it doesn't take long before he is your best friend. All you really need to do is to talk to him and give him some yummy treats. But until then, he can be a little intimidating. He has never bitten anyone but acts like he will. Not sure if he would or not. We protect him and have people meet him correctly and then there is never a problem. He never forgets a person, and he gets along beautifully with all dogs - male, female, big and small.
Trooper definitely has a big piece of our heart. He has lived with us for over 3 years now, but he deserves a real home. He is about 7-8 now and needs to know the special love of a person he can call his own. Trooper is about 50 lbs (he is a little chubby and we have him on a diet). He is up to date on his vaccines, is neutered, up to date on dewormings and preventatives and is HW negative and microchipped. We are wishing and hoping for the right family for Trooper and feel it would be a home that is more on the quiet side with less activity of people coming and going. He is now living in our puppy room, with a doggie door where he can go outside when he needs to. He is housetrained and crates very well at night. He bonds super strongly and then is the biggest teddy bear ever. His adoption fee is $175
