Here's what the humans have to say about me:
About me: Coby is a sweet, handsome and friendly 2 1/1 year old Australian Shepherd mix who was returned to us when his adopter left him behind in the home and expected the family who was renting the house from them, to care for Coby. Poor Coby went from being and inside dog to now having to live outside. When dogs are use to being an indoor companion for their family and relocated to full time outdoor life, it can be confusing for them. Dogs are Pack Animals meaning they feel comfort and acceptance in a pack. That pack can consist of both humans and canines. But when a pet's main pack has been only humane and those humans now leave that pet behind or oust him to living only outside, away from his humane pack, that pet can not only become seriously depressed, confused and dissocialized, resulting in unwanted behavior. That is what happened to Coby. He was put out to live in the back yard full time, with the family's female. While Coby liked having another dog to play with she was dominant and eventually the two of them began to fight, especially over food as she would not let Coby eat. When the fighting began the people who now had Coby thought it would pass. Until one day when they could not separate the two dogs when fighting. They then called us to return Coby.
However Coby came back to us a different dog. He lacked trust in humans. While Coby WANTED to trust and run and play with people again, he was unsure and reserved, we had to build trust in him again. Today, Coby is in a foster home with multiple other canines, of all sizes and ages, and is often found outside playing with them and enjoying the company of our many volunteers. Coby has become very found of and trusting of people again. However a foster home is no FOREVER HOME. Coby must sleep in a kennel at night instead of in his owner's bed like he did before and he must share the attention from humans with many other dogs instead of just one or two.
What a perfect home would have: The ideal home for Coby would be with a family who would allow him to be their forever pet, a family that wants a pet to be their companion and live indoors with them. While we have no objection to letting Coby outside in the yard to do his business, his PRIMARY living area is inside with his humane pack. Cody is still a Beta so having another NON AGGRESSIVE, BETA dog for Cody to play with is fine. Children to are ok for Cody as he has shown no aggression towards children, but likes having them around. As typical of an Australian Shepherd, Coby is very intelligent with a medium energy level. A fenced yard is preferred, but Coby would also make a good apartment dog, as long as his new owners are prepared to exercise him daily with two, forty five minute walks in addition to taking him to a doggy park. A family that likes to hike or camp or any activity outdoor will be good for Cody.
