My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My name is Jake!

I came into the Guelph Humane Society in June very scared and under-socialized. My GHS friends have been working very hard to help me learn that the world isn't so scary. My progress has been slow and I'm looking for an adopter who will join along in this journey with me until I'm ready to go home. I am sweet and enjoy tasty treats and neck scratches.

MY IDEAL HOME INVOLVES...
CHILDREN: No, I'm looking for an adult-only home.
OTHER DOGS: Potentially, my experience with other dogs is limited but I could benefit from having a confident, easy-going dog to learn from.
CATS: Potentially, with cat confident around dogs.
FIRST-TIME DOG OWNERS: No, I am looking for a family that has lots of dog experience.
FENCED-IN YARD: Highly recommended.
HOUSING ENVIRONMENT: No apartment buildings due to my fearful nature.
SOMEONE HOME MOST OF THE DAY: Just in the beginning while I adjust.
SOME OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME...
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium.
HOUSE-TRAINED: No, I will need some patience with house-training.

FOSTER ME! I'm excited to be selected as part of the Paisley Project and I'm looking for a foster home! If your home environment matches what I'm looking for based on the information above, please consider applying to foster me by copying and pasting the following link to fill out the questionnaire: https://guelphhumane.ca/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=frm_forms_preview&form=7y88o.
The Paisley Project aims to match selected, long-stay animals at GHS with fosters that can provide a home that gradually introduces them to the everyday experiences of life as a pet. Fosters will offer the routine, structure and stability needed to help get animals ready for their new family. Learn more at https://guelphhumane.ca/the-paisley-project/.

Our building is small but mighty. Our staff have introduced creative ways to continue our important work while maintaining appropriate social distancing in accordance with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health standards as a result of COVID-19.

At this time, we are unable to welcome more people into the building outside our staffing needs. We unfortunately cannot properly socially distance with a higher building occupancy. We thank you for your understanding and support.

More about this shelter

For 125 years, the Guelph Humane Society has been dedicated to protecting and caring for the many animals with whom we share our community and our lives, and to fostering the important bonds with animals that enrich us as individuals, families and communities. Founded in 1893, the Guelph Humane Society provides care and shelter for approximately 3,000 homeless, stray, injured, orphaned, abandoned and abused animals each year, throughout Guelph and Wellington County.

Our programs are delivered by an enthusiastic team of staff with many years of experience in animal care and welfare. In addition to paid staff, we are lucky to have nearly 300 active volunteers, who provide thousands of hours of service each year and generously share their skills and ideas with the humane society.

The Guelph Humane Society has a strong working relationship with local, provincial, and national animal welfare organizations; local school boards; the City of Guelph; Township of Centre Wellington; Township of Guelph-Eramosa; local veterinarians; the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre at the University of Guelph; and Guelph Police Services and the Provincial Crown Attorney’s Office. We are an affiliate society of the Ontario SPCA, and proud member of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS).

Our organization is guided by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers with a wide range of skills and business experience. The Board also convenes several ad hoc committees, which work to address specific issues. Day-to-day operations of the shelter are managed by the Executive Director and senior staff with the Board’s general guidance.

We are a registered charitable, non-profit organization that does not receive government funding. As such, we depend on your donations and private funding to support our important work. The Guelph Humane Society charitable registration number is 119236305RR0001.
