My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Queenie. Queenie is a 7 year old small Pit Bull Terrier Mix who came to us when her owner died unexpectedly. After that, she went to live with friends, who could not keep her permanently, but fostered her as long as they could. Eventually she came to us here at the Adams County Humane Society where she is receiving love and care. She has been through a lot and is a little shy but is as sweet as she can be. She is starting to come out of her shell a bit. We are unsure how well she gets along with other dogs but she seems to be okay with them. She does have some food aggression though, so she needs to be fed away from other animals for sure. Other than that, she is a total sweetheart and a favorite of everyone here at the shelter.

If you have room in your heart and home for Queenie and would like to meet her, please go to our website at www.adamscountyhumanesociety.org and fill out an application today. If approved, someone from our adoption team will call you to set up a meet and greet.

Additional adoption info

Congratulations on your decision to adopt an animal companion for your family. The Adams County Humane Society is happy you are considering adoption from our shelter. The goal of the ACHS is to find permanent, loving, forever homes for the animals in our facility. We do not adopt on a first come first served basis, but what home is the best fit for that particular animal. We do not hold animals for adoption more than a day and only after an application has been pre-approved. Our goal is to match the best animal for your lifestyle and family. Please complete the adoption application completely, as incomplete applications will drastically slow down the process and the animal you are looking at may be adopted before we can complete processing your application.

In order to be considered for adoption, you must:
* Be 21 years of age or if under 21 you must be a home owner. Proof of ownership may be required.
* Current pets must be up to date on rabies and distemper vaccinations.
* ACHS will check with landlords for approval of pets in rental homes/apartments/condos. If you live at home with your parents we will have to call them as well as they are the home owners. It is always a good idea to touch base with your landlord letting them know you are looking for an animal before we call them.

More about this shelter

ACHS is a small shelter 100% run by donations, adoptions and fundraisers. We do not euthanize for space, no healthy well disposition animals are ever euthanized. We need your support to continue our important work of helping the animals & people of Adams County & surrounding areas.

ACHS takes great pride in the care we give our animals on their way to loving forever homes. We can house up to about 30 cats at a time and we have 20 indoor kennels for dogs (3 1/2 by 9 feet). We have 16 large outside play areas for the dog’s so on nice days we partner them up to go outside and play. We also have 1 room we call the "Puppy Room" that is away from all the other animals and is used for a dog about to have puppies, already nursing or a litter that is too young for adoption.

Before animals are adopted the dogs are spayed /neutered, give their rabies, distemper, kennel cough and k9 Influenza vaccinations, de-wormed, Heartworm tested, on heart worm preventative, flea/ tick preventative and they get a microchip.

We test the cats to make sure they are negative for FIV/Leukemia, give rabies & distemper vaccinations, de-wormed and have a microchip as well.
