My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! I'm from Missouri!

From his foster:

Austin, is a sweet Cockapoo with a heart full of potential and a personality that's just waiting to shine! Austin may be deaf and have a minor vision impairment, but don't let that fool you-this little guy is a champion navigator.

He has brought nothing but joy to me the last 5 days. I will admit that him being deaf and with limited eyesight concerned me when I first picked him up, but within 10 minutes of him being at my house any of that concern went right out the window. He is just a bundle of happiness wrapped in a cute face with disheveled hair that makes him look like he just woke up from a nap.

He absolutely loves other animals. He was extremely interested in my cats and I do feel like if he lived with me longer, his excitement about them would calm down. He also loves dogs. I took him to my parents fenced in yard daily and he loved wiggling his cute puppy behind and chasing my parents dog around the yard to see if he would play. He did eventually do his own thing, but he just had to get his little puppy behavior out of his system (and my parents dog liked him right back).

Obviously not a requirement, but I would encourage whoever adopts him has a fenced in area for him to sniff around, or a place for him to visit (obviously not a dog park). He loves to follow his nose around and the yard brought him a lot of joy. He has zoomies (and I will admit the first time he started it, I was again terrified as I know his eyesight is limited but he figured it out with no issues). I do also think he would love to have a dog to live with.

I took him for walks around the neighborhood and also in Lebanon Hills in Dakota County and he enjoyed all of it. He pulls a little on his leash but we worked on it and he was getting better. He would always pause if someone was coming up towards him and sit down to assess the situation. He never barked or growled or anything like that. Just sat and waited. As he got more comfortable with me, he did look up at me for reassurance. I started using a finger wiggle to tell him when things were OK and I absolutely believe he could learn hand signals and have zero issues. If I got stopped talking to a neighbor, he would just lay down and take a power nap.

He loves to play catch (we were working on the returning the ball). He loves chicken and so I was using that as a training tool. He is never aggressive. He was a perfect gentleman in the car. He loves all the dog toys, though I found he liked to eat a lot of their appendages off so I did switch him to the more plastic/rubber focused ones and that saved a lot of toy arms, legs and ears! He enjoys laying on the couch as well.

He does sleep in his kennel at night, and I did put him in the kennel when I left to run errands as I needed to keep him away from my cats.

The hardest part of him is actually his apprehension about humans. He gets really nervous around humans. I was making really great progress with him over the 5 days he was with me though. I have zero concern that when he finally reaches his permanent home he will warm up to his human(s) and be just fine. He started getting better with me and was giving me kisses and playing with me as well which was really heartwarming.

He is such a catch - I can't wait to see him on the page and living his best life somewhere. I don't know his story or how long you have had him but he is pretty awesome.

From the Vet:
Hello! I am Austin and I wanted to let my future family know about my on-going medical care. I was seen at a TBB vet partner and it was determined that I need an appointment/referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist. TBB Vet Center is helping me get this scheduled, but because the retinal atrophy noted at my first appointment is likely genetic, TBB will cover one visit, but any future care for my eyes will be the responsibility of my adopter. Hope to meet you soon!

Go meet their pets

The Bond Between's goal is to not keep any animals at our rescue office. The majority of our animals are living in foster homes until they are adopted. Occasionally, animals are living in our rescue office that are in need of a foster home.

If you would like to meet an animal at our office who needs a foster, please reach out to inofficeanimals@thebondbetween.org and fill out our foster interest form at https://www.thebondbetween.org/foster

More about this rescue

The Bond Between is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that focuses on the bond between humans and animals. We were founded in 2009 as Secondhand Hounds. Since then, we have rescued over 29,000 dogs and cats with the help of thousands of fosters, volunteers, and supporters in our community. Our organization has grown from a rescue to a first-in-its-class animal wellbeing organization... now The Bond Between! We continue to provide safe shelter, proper veterinary care, and daily necessities for animals while working hard to help them build a bond with humans. We also focus on supporting the bonds that already exist between people and pets with our pet food shelf, respite foster care program, and focus on social services.

We wake up every morning saying YES to connecting people and animals, caring for them, and helping them fill each other’s hearts.

You can help support us today by donating, fostering, volunteering, or sharing The Bond Between.
