My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Duke is a 1.5-year-old, 100 pound Rottweiler with a fluffy coat and a heart of gold.

True to his breed, Duke embodies the classic Rottweiler characteristics: he is loyal, confident, and protective. **Also true to the classic Rottweiler characteristics, he is a big baby who still hasn't figured out how to not trip over his own paws.** We joke that he must be mixed with a Golden Retirver because he is extraordinarily social with people of all ages, leaning in for pets any chance he gets!

Duke is full of energy and enjoys his daily walks and although he is strong, is well behaved on the leash and continues to improve with his leash manners. He loves water and finding all of the cool sticks to bring home!

He's smart and eager to learn, but wants to be your only doggie companion. Other doggie friends get intimidated by his size and excitement so he hasn't been able to cohabitate with another dog yet. That being said, he has had multiple positive leashed interactions with dogs who are not off-put by grumbles or large dogs.

He has done well with chickens while they are in their run, and easily disengaged from excitement of their noises.

Duke thrives in an environment where he can have structure and routine. We have a high preference for:
XL Dog breed experience
Fenced yard

Although he loves children, specifically his 7 year old foster human who walks him every night, he should not live with children who may be tempted to share snacks as he is learning a lot about sharing. If you're looking for a loyal and happy go lucky addition to your family, Duke is the perfect match.

Additional adoption info

OUR SPAY AND NEUTER POLICY
The Hero Rescue charges a $100.00 spay/neuter deposit with every unaltered puppy that is adopted. The purpose of the deposit is to ensure the puppy will be altered before she/he reaches 6 months of age. This $100 deposit is refundable if adopter provides proof of sterilization within 14 days of the procedure. After the adoption is completed, all vetting (spay/neuter, boosters, heart worm and flea prevention) are the responsibility of the adopter. This deposit will not be returned if the animal is not spayed/ neutered within the established timeline.

OUR ADOPTION FEES
Puppies up to Six Months Old- $400 plus a refundable $100 Spay/Neuter Deposit ($500 total due at adoption)
Dogs Six Months and Up - $300

1. Review our adoption contract and application.

2. Call your vet and references to inform them that a rescue representative will be calling.

3. Complete adoption application and submit at https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/HRMD/Dog

4. You will be notified of outcome of your application within 3-5 days.

5. If approved, you will be introduced to the foster to schedule a meeting within 5 days. Guidelines for the meeting are:

- Bring a leash and collar and be prepared to take the animal home directly from the meeting.

- Meeting should be no longer than 1 hour. Our fosters are volunteers and we value and respect their time and personal commitments.

- All members of the household (including other dogs) must be present.

- Please be prepared to submit adoption fee via PayPal at the meeting – We do not accept payments prior to the meeting.

- If all goes well, the dog will go home with you directly after the meeting. If you are not ready to adopt at the conclusion of the meeting, please understand that we may process other applications for the dog. Because we have a limited amount of foster homes, we cannot hold dogs past adoption.

More about this rescue

Our History
The Hero Rescue launched in 2019 with a group of experienced and dedicated fosters. We combined all of our experiences to visualize the mission and operation of The Hero Rescue. We are dedicated to the animals we serve, to the families we impact, and to respect for each other. We are a 501c3 tax exempt non-profit organization.

Our Mission
The Hero Rescue is formed by a network of volunteers and fosters committed to saving lives of animals at risk of euthanasia, abuse, and neglect. By relocating animals from over crowded shelters to Maryland for adequate veterinary care, castration, emotional rehabilitation and eventually adoption, we will make a difference in the lives of animals as well as in the local communities we serve .
