My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Buddy is a sweet, friendly cat with people, but shy and wary toward other cats. He is a young and gentle big black cat with a loud clear voice. Most times he`s quiet, but when he`s hungry he meows. He`s about over a year old.

He is FIV+, but very healthy and alert. My non-FIV cats visit with him and eat out of his bowl and sometimes he eats out of their bowls. They share litter boxes too. FIV doesn`t spread like ringworm or fungus. You don`t have to shower or wash your clothes after handling him. He doesn`t have to be kept separated from other cats unless they are aggressive toward him. At the shelter, you can visit FIV+ cats BEFORE other cats, they don`t have to be the last ones to get visited. It is only spread to other cats though sex and deep bites wounds. If he does get sick, it will take him longer to recover from illness due to his suppressed immune system. FIV+ cats can live long lives if well cared for properly, even to 15-20 years old.

I think he was attacked as a kitten before coming to Houston Humane Society and someone kindly took him in as their pet, but eventually had to surrender him. That attack gave him FIV. It also makes him wary and shy of other cats. He is not aggressive at all though. He loves getting pets. He loves wet and dry food. He has a very good appetite. Indoor only. He`s neutered.

He is in foster care for socialization with other cats and to give him time out of the shelter. He`s been at HHS since July 2024 and no one adopted him because of his FIV status. He was sadly, always overlooked and passed by while other cats came and went. If you are interested in adopting and loving a beautiful FIV+ black cat and giving him a loving home, please contact HHS.
