Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Hi! My name is Kai and I am currently at BMHS in Walla Walla! I`m an awesome, medium-sized pup looking for my forever family! I`m very smart! I walk well on a leash, know how to `Sit`, `Lay down`, and `Paw!` I love squeaky toys, playing, sleeping, and being around people! I really love and can be protective of my person, but I can get nervous around men. I love sitting on your feet while you give me my favorite head scratches! I`ve lived with cats a little bit. I usually leave them alone, but sometimes run at them, so taking things slow with them will help me love them more! I used to be running in the woods, but I do pretty well with house training! I prefer hard crates over fabric, if you use them. I enjoy cuddling and will wag my tail when you come home! Come take me home! I`m the dog for you! I`d also love to meet your doggy friend, if you have one, here at the shelter before we go home. This way we can make sure we are best friends! Please contact the shelter to set a time to meet me!

1. Browse the animals online or stop by during our shelter hours.
2. Get to know the animal. Play with them, take them for a quick walk, observe their behavior.
3. Talk to our staff about the animal. Learn about their personality!
4. Once you’ve decided to adopt, fill out an adoption application. Dogs over the age of 6 months can go on a home-trial to make sure they are your perfect match. Puppy, cat, and kitten adoptions can be finalized that day!
5. Receive a lifetime of unconditional love!
Animals are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Part of our mission is to place the animals in their new forever home as soon as possible, so we normally don't "hold" an animal for the Adopter.

More about this shelter
Our mission is to prevent cruelty and promote kindness to companion animals in our community. We are committed to stopping euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets by ending overpopulation and homelessness. To achieve this we provide quality shelter, spay/neuter, foster care, adoption, and re-homing services for companion animals in our community. All cats and dogs are spayed/neutered before adoption. We also provide adoption support, and screen adopters to ensure a safe, happy & healthy home for them.
BMHS is the only animal shelter facility in Walla Walla County. The society also serves as a shelter resource for parts of Umatilla and Columbia Counties.
BMHS admits an average of 2,250 animals annually from a variety of sources. We have contracts to accept seized or stray pets from the City and County of Walla Walla. We also have contracts to shelter seized pets for the cities of College Place, Dayton, Waitsburg and Milton-Freewater. We accept pets surrendered by their owners when we have space available. While we always attempt to reunite strays with their owners, only about 20% are reclaimed each year. The rest of the animals are placed up for adoption or transferred to other no-kill shelters and rescues around the region.
We offer free, temporary housing for pets of people who are receiving assistance at all local shelters, including the YWCA, STEP shelter and the Christian Aid Center.
In addition to sheltering pets, we provide animal control services in Walla Walla County, including cruelty and neglect investigations when necessary.
During 2013, the society set a record of finding forever homes for 1,210 companion animals. New partnerships with rescue organizations around the state allowed for the transfer of over 300 animals, each one resulting in a successful adoption. Animals awaiting adoption are updated in real time on this website. Now it is possible and increasingly more common for potential adopters from Idaho, Western Washington, and Oregon to visit a pet in our shelter that they found online.
