My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Smokey is an 8 year old dachshund, bonded with Bandit—also 8 years old. These two sweeties were in a few different homes after their previous owners sadly passed, so now they need to find their forever home together. Both these boys love, love, and love each other. They are very loyal and overall great companions. Smokey has a lot of pep in his step, even with a few extra pounds.

Environment

Smokey and Bandit are both house and doggy door trained. They have not been crated in their foster home. They’re best when left together but don’t like to be left for too long. To avoid accidents in the house a good potty routine should be established. They would love it if their new people were home more often than not.

It would be great if these guys had a fenced yard as they love to roam and have shown a little bit of prey drive —especially Smokey—but if they get enough activity from walks and play then a yard isn’t totally necessary. Neither boy barks excessively, but some anxiety barking is to be expected as they settle in to a new home. Generally they are mostly quiet, so a home with shared walls would be manageable.

Pets & People

Smokey and Bandit are easy going and like other dogs. They are both gentle with food and treats, they don’t snatch or guard but they will “help” clear up any unfinished food if you have any slow eaters, especially Smokey.

Their foster home doesn’t have a lot of visitors but Bandit and Smokey have been fine with all the humans and canines they’ve had contact with—even at the vet! As yet they are untested with children. Their new home should be a calm environment where they can get lots of attention.

Health

Smokey and Bandit both need to continue losing weight, they are 23 and 18 lbs respectively.

Location

Bandit and Smokey are available for adoption from Forest, VA and love a road trip together, so they are able to be transported. Please email jhcorider@hotmail.com with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for the pair is $650.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

6 Step Adoption Process

1) Application - (While we encourage you to let us know on your application if one of our dogs has captured your interest, we use this simply as a guide for matching and your listing of specific dog in no way implies claim to this particular dog)

NOTE: Adoption Applications expire 6 months from the date of receipt. If you have already submitted an Adoption Application and it has been longer than 6 months, you will need to fill out a new Adoption Application.

2) Reference Checks - All references will be checked prior to home visit. We will contact your current vet, if you have one, for a reference.

3) Application Review - Processor reviews the application, calls the vet if you have one, verifies vaccinations and spay/neuter. We email personal references (if email is provided) or call them if necessary. Email is best since as references can respond when they are available.

4) Home Visit - A volunteer will come to your home to visit with you and discuss care of dachshunds. Also, the volunteer will look for any potential problems and check to be sure that your fencing is secure. Your home visit does not mean you have been approved.

5) Approval - After the above steps have been completed all your information will be reviewed and a decision will be made about adoption. If at this point you are approved to adopt, LPDR will help guide you to the appropriate dog for your family.

6) Contract - For the protection of the dogs we place, everyone that adopts a dachshund from LPDR will be required to sign an adoption contract.

Go meet their pets

Are you looking for an opportunity to foster a dachshund? Fostering is our transitional step from a shelter/surrender to a forever home. During this time it’s important that we give each dachshund a safe environment where it can learn to trust again, to heal and to learn how to become a loving family member. Many of the dachshunds that we pull from shelters or receive from an owner surrender just need a temporary home until their new forever home can be found. Please go to our website (www.LittlePawsDR.org) to learn more.

More about this rescue

Little Paws Dachshund Rescue is a foster-based, non-profit animal rescue that specializes in finding permanent homes for dachshunds, dachshund mixes, and other small dogs. It is LPDR’s goal to identify abandoned, mistreated, or homeless dogs and oversee their treatment and well being while working to find loving owners for those in our care. We strive to make the lives of all dogs better through action, advocacy, awareness and education.
