My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Good with: Dogs Not tested with: Kids, cats House trained: Yes Energy level: Medium Noise level: Some Hi, Im Astro! Im the sweetest love bug youll ever meet, and Im always up for fun. Im a curious, playful pup who loves exploring the world around mewhether its meeting new dogs, greeting people, or checking out new places. I enjoy running, playing, and chewing on toys, but once Ive gotten my zoomies out, Im more than happy to snuggle up for some quiet time. Im still learning my basic commands, but Im a quick learner, especially if treats are involved! Ive got medium energy, so I love getting outside for long walks, hikes, or a good run around the yard. Once Ive had my exercise, though, I settle in and nap for hours. Just give me a little time to get comfortable in my new home, and Ill be the perfect balance of playful and relaxed. One of my favorite things is playing chaseeither chasing or being chased! Ive got some pretty cute moves when Im running around, and Im super curious, like my nickname Curious George suggests. While Im full of energy, Im also working on my training. I know a few commands like come, off, and leave it, but I still need some help with leash walking and basic obedience. I might pull on the leash a bit until Ive gotten some energy out, but Im always excited to meet new people and other dogs on my walks. I love making new dog friends and would do great in a home with another dog to play with. My ideal home would have a yard for me to run around in and someone who can spend time with me. Id love a family thats active, maybe with another dog, but Id be happy with first-time dog owners too, as long as theyre around to hang out with me. If youre looking for a fun, playful, and loving companion, Im your guy! My foster guardian says: Astro could be nicknamed curious george for how interested he is in every dog, person, home and surroundings! I love to see him chase and be chased as he has the cutest moves! Likes: Walks, hikes, dog parks, running, zoomies My ideal home: Id love a home and another dog as a companion, but Id do well in a variety of homes as long as I get the exercise and attention that I need! Additional adoption info

Adoption area is Washington, D.C area, including Northern Virginia and Maryland. All adoptions require a completed adoption application. Our adoption coordinators will contact you soon after reviewing the application. Our adoption fee is $450 to help off set the costs of rescuing dogs in need. All dogs go to their new homes spayed or neutered, up to date on all shots, wormed (although a 2nd worming may be required), started on heart worm and flea and tick preventative and sometimes microchipped.

Although we try to be as accurate as possible, Rural Dog Rescue cannot guarantee the breed or full-grown adult size of any of the dogs or puppies in its care. Because many of these dogs were found as strays or are the result of irresponsible, unplanned breeding, we do not know the dog's exact background and can only list breed and size by our best educated guess. If exact breed and size are important to you, please consider adopting a dog from a specific breed rescue. We want our dogs to be adopted by people who will love and care for them forever for who they are - no matter what breed and size they turn out to be!

More about this rescue

Rural Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to save the lives of dogs and cats in high-kill shelters in rural areas with euthanasia rates of 80% or higher.

Mission Statement: Forever true to The Underdog, Rural Dog Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in shelters who are often overlooked for adoption or rescue. We save the dogs who are at most risk of being euthanized: the hounds, the black dogs, the seniors, the sick and the broken. We make a commitment to reserve a minimum of 50% of the dogs we save to The Underdog. Root For The Underdog!

Rural Dog Rescue's home base is in Washington, DC. We support several high kill shelters that euthanize in 72 hours and whose kill rate is 70% or higher in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina. Rural Dog Rescue also helps dogs in need in Washington, DC and Maryland.

We are 100% volunteer and foster based and no salaries are paid. 100% of your donation and adoption fee goes to helping the dogs and cats of Rural Dog Rescue.
