Franz von Freren is a stunning, 3-year-old, long-haired German Shepherd. Handsome Franz with his luxurious coat has lots of love to give and is interested in all kinds of adventures in a forever adult home that has experience with shepherds. Franz is loyal and very loving with his people and soaks up attention and affection. He can be unsure of new people so he needs a confident owner who can make sure introductions are done carefully. Franz is housebroken, crate-trained and has done well inside a home. He is eager to please and heels nicely on walks around the rescue. His tail is often wagging and he enjoys being around other dogs on walks and in playgroups. He is very playful with other playful dogs and would enjoy another pup to play with (but no small dogs or cats please). Come meet Franz if you have what it takes and are looking for a devoted and loving best friend.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
