My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mildred von Merzig is a beautiful, 9-10 month-old, smaller-sized Shepherd mix. Are you looking for a sweet pocket-sized shepherd who, at 45 pounds, is the perfect size to fit in your lap? Mildred wants you to know she is ready to meet you! Mild-mannered Mildred is one of those sweet love bugs with a winning personality. She heels beautifully on leash and is happy to walk beside you and meet other dogs (she especially loves being petted during her walk). At playtime, she comfortably roams around our play yard and is very curious about her surroundings. She is a social butterfly who just wants to know what everyone is doing. This goofball would love to be invited to play by other dogs and would do well with another dog or two at home. (She arrived at the rescue with Ian, and they are available as an optional pair.) With people, she literally melts into your arms and wants to jump in your lap to shower you with kisses. The closer she can get to you, the better! This smart girl is very treat-motivated and eager to please, and will soon be spinning circles or sitting pretty for some treats once she is trained to do so. Mildred is one of those one-in-a-million dogs who will make the perfect addition to your family (just no cats or small animals around this pup). Mildred can’t wait to greet and kiss you!

Rescued from the Apple Valley animal shelter.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
