My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Miss Evelyn came to Longmeadow when her previous owners could not give her the proper care she deserved. She had spent her days roaming freely around the property, eating whatever she could find and not receiving any vet or farrier care. She desperately needed nourishment and training. When we picked her up from the property, Miss Evelyn was pushy and unaware of her surroundings. After arriving to Longmeadow and being seen by our vets, we found that Evelyn was going blind in her right eye. As soon as we received this information, we began her groundwork training and evaluation in a way that made her feel comfortable and the staff feel safe.

It took Miss Evelyn a long time to settle into life at Longmeadow. She was alone and could not see well, and making friends was not something that came easy to the 25-year-old mare. Our trainers believe it had been years since she had been handled. She needed patience and reassurance as staff reminded her how to be half-trained. Day by day, however, Miss Evelyn began to come around. She became more comfortable and confident. She is still working on her groundwork manners and how to stand quietly for the farrier, but she’s come such a far way!

Upon evaluation, our trainers were able to ride her at the walk with a bareback pad and a halter. It took them a few days to reintroduce her to riding, but she seemed to remember it and was willing to let them ride her around the arena. Due to her history and lack of training, however, our trainer believes she will need a refresher from a patient, professional trainer. She appreciates positive reinforcement and picks up on tasks very quickly. She should go to a confident, intermediate handler.

*Like many older horses, Miss Evelyn has been diagnosed with Cushings. She can live comfortably with the disease by taking once-per-day medication called Pergolide, also known as Prascend.*
