My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Life’s all Hugs and Snugs with this Sweet Boy!

Hey there, I’m Hugs, a 5-year-old, 48-pound Lab mix with a heart as big as my name suggests. I’ve been through quite a journey, but it’s only made me sweeter, kinder, and more eager to find my forever home.

I came from the ESLR "shelter" in Ensenada, where I survived dog attacks, hunger, and even BB guns. Despite all this, I’ve remained the happiest, goofiest guy you could ever meet. My name suits me perfectly because I genuinely love giving and receiving hugs!

I’m a very special boy with a couple of special needs. I’ve got a bit of separation anxiety and will break out of regular crates, so I need a Separation Anxiety Crate. Enrichment toys and food puzzles help keep me calm, and I take Trazodone (~$10 per month) to stay chill in my crate. After a daring leap off a balcony (turns out I’m not cut out for flying), I healed from fractures in my front legs and carpal bone. My legs are fully healed, but I’ll develop carpal arthritis and need to avoid jumping off furniture and stairs. I’m on Dasaquin Joint Chew Supplements (~$75 per 5 months) and fish oil for my joints and bones.

Despite what I’ve been through, I’m a survivor and ready to share my love with a new family. I’m dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and although I haven’t met any cats yet, I’m open to it! I’m sweet, lazy, and absolutely adore adventures like laying in the grass at parks or hanging out at breweries. I’m silly, eager to please, cuddly, funny, and yes, I give the best hugs!

I love snuggling, being around people, going for walks, getting treats and pets, enjoying lick mats, and chilling at breweries. I’m potty trained, house trained, leash trained, and I’m a fast learner! I’d be over the moon to spend my days by your side as you work and then cuddle up with you in the evenings. I’m curious, well-behaved, and nearly pawfect.

I’d thrive in a home where I can have company most of the time and maybe even a furry sibling to play with. I love other dogs and would be so happy to be part of a family that loves me just as much as I’ll love them. Adopt me, and let’s create a lifetime of Hugs and tailwags together!

My adoption fee is $250 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip. If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
