My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi my name is Darla!  I was found running loose with my brother.  My brother and I were split up and placed in two different shelters due to space problems in the one facility.  To be expected, I felt timid and shy when I first arrived.  The staff are spending time with me so I don't feel quite so alone.  Snuggling up with my new human would really help me feel safe and loved.  I am learning to walk on leash; something quite new to me.  I am currently spending time in a volunteers home getting acquainted with home life.  They have a dog and a cat and I am doing very well with them both.  In fact, I would really benefit with a companion animal if possible. We all take long walks in the woods which I really love. I am spayed now. and having my shots updated prior to my adoption.  I hope you will consider me.  Woof, Darla

      A NOTE FROM DARLA'S FOSTER

Darla has been such a sweet girl since being in our home!

She was certainly anxious/nervous when she get here and can be a bit nervous still when it comes to new place or situations.

She’s really opened up and is learning that the world isn’t a scary place!

She plays very well with my other dogs- primarily my Great Dane. They have been the cutest to watch play! They get a good game of tug in every morning!

I will say she can be a bit “pushy” if she gets excited and my Dane is very tolerant. So she would do best with another dog who can match her energy or gives gentle corrections, which she does take well.

She loves tug and toys and seems happy to share toys! She is a “nibbler”, as in will nibble things she’s unsure if she’s supposed to have or not (it’s kind of cute lol) but this has been easily redirectable with an “ah-ah” and showing her something she can chew on.

She is crate trained and hasn’t made one peep in the crate since the first day she’s been here! I would 100% recommend having a crate for her if you’re planning to leave her in the house while you leave. It would probably be best to crate her at night as well.

We do not have children, so I cannot personally attest to that. But I believe she would be ok with kids. She’s not mouthy but can sometimes jump (which we’ve been working on) but again with an “ah-ah” she quickly gets down and sits and waits to be pet (again, very stinkin’ cute)

I’ve taken her to the creek & river, she seems to like water but doesn’t want to go deep enough to swim.

While she’s with us, we’re working primarily on loose leash walking and building her confidence up! She can be a bit scared of getting in the car but does well once she’s in. She’s also a bit scared of steps, which we are working on and will come with building her confidence.

Some of her funny quirks include: plays with her toys holding her head back (see video), leans in when you scratch her behind the ear, and rubs against you like a cat when she’s looking for attention

Overall, this sweet girl will be a great addition to any family. She’s medium energy and would probably be very happy with a big yard and a familiar place to walk. She also keeps up well on long walks! She will not be a dog who’s ready to stroll the town with you yet (busy streets, lots of people), but if someone was willing to put the training & time in, I think she certainly could be!

I’m happy to answer any questions for anyone who is genuinely interested in adopting this sweet girl!
