My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gatsby is an outgoing and happy guy! He loves toys, especially balls and crinkle toys. This energetic fella is ready to run!

His foster says "Gatsby is a sweet & smart boy! I could tell he was very stressed from shelter life the first day and once he realized he had some peace and quiet he has settled in so nicely. He is potty trained and has had zero accidents. He has not shown any aggression and has not destroyed anything in my home or gotten into anything he shouldn't have. He love toys and treats and he is rarely without an emotional support toy nearby which is hilarious and adorable. He is very smart, knowing "sit" and recognizing "outside", "inside", and "treat". I know with training he is capable of so much more. He is still working on being gentle on the leash but he has already improved in the week that I have had him. I let him out freely in my fenced in yard and have had no issues with him getting back inside.

He likes to be near his human but is never overbearing or in the way. He knows the routine of going into the kennel at night and waits patiently for his treat before heading into the kennel on his own and sleeps through the night. I have left him in a closed bedroom for short periods of time and he has done fine. I think he will eventually be fine to be left alone out in the house, once he is comfortable in his forever home.

Gatsby is very easy going and will make a great addition to a home with human(s) who love a chill, smart dog."

---

His short term foster said "In the last two days, he hasn't peed or pooped in the house; he is very well-behaved. He is adorable when it comes to laying down, he needs love and never wants to leave my side. On the couch, he lies down and sleeps peacefully. We are going for a walk every day for his muscle strength exercises. "

A volunteer said "Today I walked Gatsby. He was a very sweet boy who loves his ball. He carried it with him the whole time, but did put it down for treats and good smells. He was very good on a leash throughout the walk. He does need some help learning to take treats gently, as he gets a bit too excited. Overall, he is a very good boy with an amazing smile, and would make a great part of anyone's family"

More about this shelter

Welcome to CMHS! In continuous operation since 1943, the Central Missouri Humane Society promotes the well-being of companion animals – pets that enrich the lives of the people who love them.

The Columbia Humane Society was formed in 1943 to provide shelter and care for Columbia’s abandoned animals. Originating in a little structure on Creasy Springs Road, the organization has grown into today’s Central Missouri Humane Society, a regional animal welfare agency caring for thousands of animals annually and providing veterinary services for low-income pet owners.
