***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico***

Hello everyone!

My name is Jack (originally Ken from the Barbie Litter ), and I have quite a story to tell you all. I was born to a feral momma dog in Mexico. Surfers for Strays tried to catch and sterilize her but failed until after we were born. I must say, I'm glad they failed before! Our mom did her best, but our accommodations were modest, to say the least. We grew up in a rundown, dirty shack with nails and broken glass on the ground. This wasn't ideal for raising pups, and sadly, some of our siblings didn't make it. Four of us survived thanks to a local woman who found our hiding spot and called Surfers for Strays for help. Until we moved to the shelter, volunteers came all the time, built a pen for us, brought clean water, lots of food for momma, gave us meds, baths, and oh, so much love. We couldn't help but love them back!

Life completely changed once we got to the shelter. We made new four-legged friends and lots of two-legged ones too! We were trained, loved, cuddled, and just had a great time. One by one, we got adopted and flew to the US and Canada, including me.

Unfortunately, what I thought was my forever home turned out to be only temporary. I started showing signs of hip dysplasia, a diagnosis confirmed by the vet. I was really sad to learn that my new family couldn't go through this hardship with me. I flew back to Mexico to a sweet foster home with lots of other doggies needing special attention! Don't get me wrong, I'm still a total happy-go-lucky pup - I never stop smiling and wagging my tail because I can always look at the bright side of life. Though deep down, I long for a home where I can be assured that forever means forever!

Since returning to Mexico, I've received proper pain medication and when I didn't respond to that anymore, they brought me to a vet to get stemcells injected. It was just a few shots, but they made a big deal out of it, because it's such a new promising treatment! I must say, I understand the hype, because I am completely off pain meds now and I am clearly thriving! I go on an hour long walk every morning and evening and secretly I'd love to walk even longer! Please talk to them if you need more info on everything medical-related - I'm not a pro at those things!

I'm an absolute master at other things, though, like cuddling, for example. My foster momma says she's never met a cuddlier dog. Even though it's hot as heck here in Mexico, I need. NEED. to touch her when I sleep next to her at night or when she is working. Who cares about the heat when you can cuddle?!

I'm really friendly with all humans and other dogs. Meeting new dogs on the leash excites me a lot, and I'm currently working on saying hi in a slow way, as I guess not everyone is as excited as me all the time! The most exciting thing ever is when I see a chicken or a bird. Or a squirrel. Or a cat... You get the drill. I probably shouldn't be off-leash in such moments... who knows where those little critters will lead me!

I would love to romp around all day with my foster mates, but my foster momma says that only "calm play" is allowed. She doesn't want my hip to get hurt. That's nice of her, I guess. But oh boy, would I love to play if I could. I wouldn't stop playing chase in the yard and running like crazy.

My foster momma says I'm very smart, even though I'm not excessively food-driven. I do take treats, of course, but the treats must be really good. I have a distinguished palette, and my foster momma needs to step up her game! I'm very well-behaved alone in the room or in my crate. I have my basic manners straight, especially regarding food. Of course, I know Sit, Down, Paw, Turn, and Stay. I'm currently learning to walk backward and to place my front legs up on a higher level without jumping on it. Sniffing is one of my favorite things to do, and even though I walk pretty well on the leash, I have a hard time focusing on you for longer than a second (the second it takes to take the treat ;)). I'm also housebroken!

I think of myself as a really good boy. Ask my foster momma if you need references. I'm trying to live every day with the utmost joy I can find in my heart! I forget everything that doesn't go so well (pain, abandonment, dog attacks,...) in a heartbeat. Focus on the positive, they say, right? I can proudly say that I've mastered this lifestyle!

One thing is still missing for me to be completely happy... A permanent family. Will you be the one? Please reach out to the Surfers for Strays team if you have any questions. I promise, I'm worth it!

Lots of love, cuddles, and face licks,

Your Jack

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
