My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Emergency hamster intake- supplies needed!

Two days ago someone contacted me because they purchased 3 Syrian hamsters from a local pet shop (not a large chain store- but a smaller store that I will refrain from mentioning here). One is a male, the other two are female. The females quickly became pregnant and both had litters of babies. The owner called me in a panic because the one mother escaped the cage they had them in, and the babies were all running loose. They managed to catch the babies, but mom is still MIA. Fortunately these babies are old enough that they are eating on their own, and with some daily supplementation should do okay.

These poor animals were living in a cage that literally looks like a child’s toy- Fischer price style. The wheel not even big enough for the tiny 3 week old babies to climb on.

Sadly the one mom is still missing, but the two other hamsters (who are babies themselves!) are safe with me. I wasn’t anticipating taking in this many animals at once. The owner was going away on vacation today, so they were eager to “get rid” of this problem.

I wish pet stores were better educated and offered appropriate guidance to new pet owners. Syrian hamsters are SOLITARY animals and should never be housed together once they are old enough to be separated from their mom. They also start breeding at a very young age. Another reason why they should be separated asap.

The male from this group is pretty friendly, so he will be available for adoption soon! The babies will hopefully be ready for new homes in a few weeks.

I’ve added some hamster specific items to the rescues Amazon wishlist! Any donations are greatly appreciated! These photos are from the hamsters intake this morning before I had to run out for an adoption event, they are all in larger habitats with the appropriate food/water and enrichment. More photos coming soon!
