My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Neptune is looking for their forever home!

Meet Neptune, the canine embodiment of the Roman god of the sea-full of energy and always making waves! This energetic pup is as trainable as they come, eager to learn and impress - a great candidate for adopters that love training or want a dog that will train! He's already learned sit, down, stay, come, off, up, go potty, and is working heel.

All Neptune wants to do is train, walk, play and be your best friend (even in the bathroom). He loves to play with dogs of all kinds and loves children, babies, and all other humans. Whether he's splashing in the water like his namesake or cuddling up for some quality time, this lovable companion brings a tidal wave of joy and excitement wherever he goes!

WHAT MY FOSTER SAYS: Back in July, we pulled Neptune from the PG County Shelter. He gets along with dogs, cats, and kids. He may try to chase your cats to play, so it’s good if your cats are dog-savvy and have places to escape to.

Everyone who has spent time with Neptune knows he is a truly special guy. He's very sensitive and in tune to how his people are feeling. He looks to you for guidance and is ready to be the guy you lean on. On day two of fostering Neptune, he was looking at me for guidance in unfamiliar situations. I realized he already started to build a bond with me in just a few short days. He craves love and human interaction. He is a sucker for a good cuddle on the couch, giving you full face kisses, and laying in your lap. He would also love to sleep with you in your bed if you'd let him. He really wants to have a deep bond with his person or people. He's the kind of dog who is super loyal and trusting once he thinks you're his person. He's also highly intelligent. He was learning to go between my legs and sit right in the middle. We worked on paw, sit, stay, down, come, and were practicing the relaxation protocol in addition to desensitization of being in his crate. If Neptune has a fairly active day with physical and mental enrichment, he settles nicely into his crate and naps without a peep. He's also very food motivated.

If he could talk, Neptune would say he feels let down and misunderstood. Neptune has bounced around from several fosters who didn't feel he was the right fit and he's been boarding since October. Neptune needs someone who is patient and wants to understand him. He needs someone who is active. After fostering him for two months, when we did two good walks a day, sometimes mixed with dog play dates (he lovessss to play with playful dogs and run around a park), and mental enrichment like frozen Kongs with peanut butter, DIY puzzles, and long lasting edible bones/treats, he could relax in the house.

Neptune wants nothing more to be on his best behavior and be loved by people in a home—he just needs a chance. He’s struggled with separation anxiety and mouthiness, particularly during times of transition and high excitement or overstimulation, so a patient home that will help him decompress and help him manage those interactions will be key. He’s so intelligent that with training and structure around exercise / daily activity he does so well!

ATTRIBUTES: Neptune has done well with dogs, cats (likes to play / chase so dog savvy cats), and kids that are comfortable with big dogs!
