My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GEMMA IS BEING FOSTERED IN BLOOMINGTON IL

Meet our precious Gem who has MASTERED her puppy dog stare!  Our sweet Gemmy girl was found in a field as a stray, so not much is known about her history. We think she is around 2 years old as she is playful and has a lot of energy! What we have discovered so far in foster care is that our wigglebutt is GOOFY, and she has a high prey-drive with smaller animals; therefore, a house without cats and smaller dogs is crucial for her to thrive.

We have also learned that her favorite spot, undeniably, is against her person on the couch snuggled in for a warm movie night. She is an EXPERT cuddler and would love nothing more than to spend her evenings snuggled up to her person rubbing her head, chest and belly!

Gemma weighs around 45 lbs, and she is very active and playful. While she loves a chill night in, she equally loves running around the house showing off all her stuffies and squeaky toys! Since Gemma is cautious around new people and places, this kind of exercise is ideal for her as well as short walks around the neighborhood! Her foster family uses these walks as opportunities to teach Gem that the outside world is not so big and scary when you’re by the side of someone who loves you!

Gemma appears to be afraid of strangers, but with patience and a lot of treats, her foster family is showing her that strangers can be warm and welcoming too! She has made TREMENDOUS progress in her foster home, meeting new people, hearing new sounds and experiencing all the world has to offer. We would highly suggest that anyone who'd be present in her adoptive home utilize the time and patience to get to know her and invest in earning her trust. The reward is worth it! A strong, confident leader paired with deli meat treats and lots of pets is Gem’s recipe for success.

Speaking of treats, it is important to know that Gemma has shown ZERO food aggression, and is perfectly fine taking treats from your hand once you have gained her trust, making training and confidence-building easier! We are looking for the perfect adopter who will not only be gentle and understanding with Gemma as she learns how to navigate a new adoptive life, but someone who will guide her, continue her training, and someone who will soak up all her hugs and kisses along the way! And there will be TONS!

Because of our quirky girl's energy level, and her high prey drive, she will require a home without small animals and kids under the age of 12. Loud or sudden movements can be scary for our girl, so we try to reduce them whenever possible.  Gemma is potty trained and crate trained, putting herself in her kennel at night. Don't let this fool you though, our Gem is able to be left out when leaving the house as she does not get into mischief, but crate training has given her a safe spot to go if she gets overwhelmed. In Gem’s world, there is nothing better than kenneling up with a frozen carrot at the end of the night!

Gemmy girl loves toys and bones and shares nicely with her four legged foster brother, Ernie. Fetch and chase are two of her favorite games to play. While Gem loves to run around the backyard and go for walks in the neighborhood, a big action such as traveling in the car is still a bit scary for sweet Gemma. This being said, someone who is home more often than not to give her love and attention and willing to work on her socialization skills/training is a must!

Our spitfire has lots of personality quirks such as “talking” or “grumbling” when she wants attention and placing herself directly at your feet for kisses on the head! Ideally, her furever home will be active, but predominantly quiet as Gemma can become stressed when she sees/hears other dogs at a distance. She is very perceptive to sudden noises such as heavy machinery outside or other dogs in the area barking. Because of this, we recommend a home where there are not a lot of people coming and going at all times/other dogs barking around her. She is definitely an energetic, talkative gal and would love a pup sibling or two if they were larger and will welcome a spunky little sister coming into their home!

Gemma is being fostered in Bloomington, IL, She is spayed and up-to-date on all shots and preventatives, she is a highly velcro Aussie who will follow her person anywhere, and she is a TOTAL lover. Are you the perfect match for her?

Additional adoption info

Meeting any dog within MASR requires an approved adoption application on file. We process as quickly as possible via volunteers. Then connect an applicant one at a time with a dog and foster home to arrange a meet and greet. If all parties at the meet and greet, including the dog, are in agreement that it is a good fit, the dog goes home that day.
