My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hawk is a 1 year old male German Shepherd. He was found stray and came to us from our local shelter after no one came for him for 4 months.

Hawk is a young guy full of curiosity, spirit, and life! He loves to play fetch, meet other dogs, go for walks, meet new people, and play with toys. We don't think Hawk has had a ton of new experiences in his short life, but he has a great attitude and is full of curiosity. Any new adventure, Hawk is up for it!

Hawk is a young German Shepherd who doesn't seem to have had much training or direction in his short life. At the shelter he displayed a lot of inappropriate behaviours such as jumping up, mouthing, grabbing clothing and just being pushy in general. However, Hawk learns very quickly and with a confident handler (and maybe some treats!), he quickly switches his attitude and offers appropriate behaviours such as sits and eye contact for treats. He will also sit for toys and is an excellent fetch partner, trading his ball for another ball or treats, and sitting politely till it's thrown. We feel like he simply was not taught what behaviours are appropriate and which ones aren't in his previous home.

Hawk is well behaved with other dogs. He is respectful, neutral and friendly with older slower dogs, and playful with younger bouncier dogs. He does like to chase zoomy dogs and tries to catch them, so he does need some intervention to prevent big adrenalized play with other zoomy dogs. He has a high prey drive for chickens and other small outdoor animals, and may not be a good fit for a home with cats.

Hawk loves everybody that he meets! He loves leaning on people for pets, jumping up, and playing with them, and is excited to meet new people. At this time, we feel like Hawk would do best with older children while he is still learning that jumping up and mouthing is not appropriate. He has been on a trip to a patio and loved everyone he met, but still needs some work on impulse control and relaxing in busy environments - Hawk just wanted to greet and play with everyone around him!

Hawk has met young children and is very friendly with them, but he is a big pup and does lean against people and move quickly, so he would do best with older children. He has a tendency to accidentally lean on, push, and step on people and could easily intimidate or knock over small children accidentally.

Hawk is currently being fostered in an apartment building with another dog. He goes into his crate following kibble, and happy to quietly nap in his crate. He is fine in the elevator, but stairs seem unfamiliar and overstimulating for him. He's still learning! Hawk settles very easily, so he is well behaved and quiet in a smaller apartment, although he does need long walks and training sessions to fulfil him in between his rest time.
