Parker von Parsau is a beautiful, 11-12 month-old, smaller mix of mystery breeds. We asked Parker what his breed was, and he shrugged his shoulders and said, “It’s a mystery.” He did say he knew a few things. Namely, he said his favorite activities are getting pet, mingling and playing with calm dogs. He was proud to say he knew how to do sit and paw on command and take treats very gently when given them. Parker asked us to find him a home without any cats and one that would take him on fun trips and romps (“I would describe my energy levels as medium,” states Parker). As our chat wrapped up, Parker thanked us for rescuing him from the animal shelter and said that he’s ready to meet his forever family now. He says his whole life was shades of black and white but is now ready to see a beautiful world full of color — will you show it to him?

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.

Adoption fees vary with each dog and typically range from $150 to $500. They are set, taking into account the dog's age, training level, temperament, if they’re newly arrived, medical condition(s) (if any) and other factors. Adoption fees are used not only to rescue and place the dog you are personally adopting, but to aid in the future rescue and rehabilitation of other deserving dogs. Adoption fees are necessary; without fees, our rescue efforts would quickly come to an end. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations.
