Chickpea ACCT-A-167908 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Chickpea must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by Sunday, July 28th at 10 A.M. Should Chickpea's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Chickpea was brought to ACCT when he was found running the streets, which is apparently not a new thing for him. Chickpea's owner declined to reclaim him because of Chickpea's tendency to escape the home, and go on adventures by himself.
Chickpea has shown us that he's very laid back and gentle so far in our care. He's met a few other dogs and did well with neutral body language. He's a chill boy looking to chill with you in his forever home!
Behavior notes:
6/30 Chickpea came outside very confident and interested in the handlers. He stuck by my side while I tried to engage in play and was very gentle. He did not want to tug too hard so he would release but that would also follow with him being distracted by outside forces. Chickpea loved to run around the yard and get pets, coming up and jumping on my lap for some cuddles. He had a little fence meet with Beauford and was very calm and content, wagging tail and neutral eyes. Chickpea prefers more quiet and calm environments, barking very loudly and high pitched when he did not get attention from other dogs or people. Otherwise a very sweet and playful pup.
7/2 Chickpea was pretty excited to come out of kennel and was jumping up on the bars for a bit. It took a couple tries to leash him just because he was wiggling so much. Once out of kennel he pulled quite a lot! He is strong and definitely knows where he wants to go. He did well for his dog meet but definitely can come on a bit strong so would need a tolerant dog! He was social and sweet with me, just very very strong on leash. Returned to kennel without issue.
7/2 Chickpea got to get out for some activity time today! In kennel he was a little nervous at first. He was curled up on the backside of kennel, napping. He looked up with semi hard eye contact, but he softened up as he realized I was there to take him out. He stood up slowly and sniffed me through the bars, and began wagging as I showed him the leash. He pawed at the door as I opened it, but was easy to leash and came right out once secured. Chickpea seems house rained, as he started going potty as soon as we got out! He can pull a bit on leash, but is still easy to manage. In the yard he sniffed around and finished up all his potties. He would stop by the gate every so often and paw at it, trying to get out. He wasn't super fixated, and would try a couple times, I would shoo him away, and he would go back to sniffing around. Chickpea played a bit with a rubber toy I had. He only wanted to play when I held it, and did not really like chasing or playing fetch. He also did not want to commit to tug with me, and just mouthed at the toy in my hand gently. He was very respectful and never got my hand at all! After some play I called him over and he came right up for some pets. He allowed me to remove his collar which was twisted up, and happily sniffed and licked it when I showed him his collar. He allowed some all over pets and affection, but was short lived as he wanted to continue sniffing around the yard instead. When it was time to return Chickpea gave me no issues walking through the kennels or returning!
7/4 No issues leashing or getting out of the kennels! Pretty strong boy on leash, he does pull with just a neck leash but a harness should work great for him! He's not overly affectionate but accepted some pets and remained very loose. Super gentle boy! Not really interested in treats but when he did take them it was very gentle. Very chill outside in the play yard, just liked sniffing around. He drank straight from the hose for a drink!
Chickpea would do best in a home where he can get all the enrichment and attention he needs, so that he doesn't have go on adventures by himself anymore.
