My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tarot has the most beautiful blue eyes! Now imagine having him look at you adoringly first thing when you wake up every morning. You might never have a bad day again!

Tarot was found as a stray, so his history is a mystery. Maybe because he was on his own for a while - there's no knowing how long - he's a bit shy around new people at first. Just hang out with him and relax, talking softly, tossing some yummy treats his way, and watch him blossom. Suddenly this shy guy will turn into a total social butterfly, ready for lovin', and pets, pets and more pets.

As near as we can tell, Tarot doesn't really know what a leash is, so you'll need to go slowly and help him learn. If you have a fenced yard that will help him have a place for comfort breaks that feels safe to him, and it will also be a good place to teach him what leash-walking is all about. Use treats and praise, and he'll soon learn that following you and eventually getting to go new places is a Very Cool Thing. Before you know it, you'll be out and about together, helping him work off all his young-dog energy.

Positive reinforcement training is a great way to bond with any new dog, so you can also teach him his basic commands. The more he's rewarded for learning, the more he'll grow in confidence. Bonus: Training, along with puzzle toys and slow feeders, works his brain and also helps him burn off energy.

We think Tarot would do well in a home where any children are at least six years old, and we'd like to introduce him to the entire family here at the shelter. If you already have a dog - or several - we'd like to introduce them here, too, since we don't know if he's ever lived with other dogs. We'll make sure their play styles and energy levels are a good match before we send him home. If you're a cat family, let your counselor know and they'll give you great tips for at-home introductions.

There's one thing - besides those incredible eyes - you'll notice about Tarot right away. He has no tail! When he came to us, we noticed that his tail had been badly injured, and our vets made the decision that the best thing to do was amputate. No worries about knowing when he's happy, though. He'll let you know by wiggling his whole behind. Pretty soon you won't even notice that he doesn't have a tail to tell you how he's feeling, because his body language will say it all.

Ready to start impressing your neighbors by having the most beautiful dog on the block? Why not come visit us here at the shelter to meet Tarot and our other available dogs? You could be going home with one more family member than you came with.

More about this shelter

Mission:
Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, works together with our community better the lives of animals through justice, prevention, and life-saving care.

Vision: A just and compassionate world for all animals.

Lollypop Farm is not your typical animal welfare organization. We don’t classify ourselves as merely a shelter, simply taking in and rehoming pets. Rather, we are your partner. We’ll work with you to build a just and compassionate world for all animals–to save animals from abuse and suffering, to find a resource to keep your pet, to guide you in adopting a new pet, to make the tough decision to say goodbye to your family friend or to share information on how to help animals in your daily life.
