My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! I'm Addeline. I am from Missouri.

I am an 8 year old, 10 pound poodle. I am from a breeder release, but get along well with other dogs and people. My foster mom calls me Addie. I'm starting to recognize my name when she talks to me. I'm even starting to wag my tail just a tiny bit. The most important thing to know about me is that I am just starting to learn that humans can be good. It's going to take me a while to really trust my person. People in my past haven't been very kind to me. What I really want is a kind, gentle human who understands I will need to go at a slow pace in becoming part of the family. You can't change my past, but patience, consistency and love you can change my future.

From her foster: Addie is the sweetest little thing that I want to snuggle so she knows she is safe now. But I don't because that isn't what Addie needs right now. What she does need is time and space to understand that life can be good. Her ideal human would be someone who will commit to allowing Addie to develop trust, confidence and love in baby steps. And having a calm companion dog to learn from would help her in that journey.
Addie is a breeder release rescue. Addie is cautious and fearful of people right now. It's obvious she hasn't had a lot of positive human contact. It will take the right person and environment to help her learn life can actually be good and people can be loving.
Addie is also smart, curious and wanting trust me. Even with all she has been through, Addie wants to bond. She has already progressed so much in the short time I've had her. Instead of hiding in the corner of her kennel, she is napping with her head resting on the open door as I write this. My desk a few feet from her. She is cautiously willing to let me come a bit closer to her, even taking a treat from my hand, as long as she can quickly retreat back to the safety of her kennel. We are able to be outside a few minutes longer each day as Addie gets used to sights, smells and sounds that she has probably not experienced before.
We have been working on potty training. As I said, Addie is smart. She is catching on that we go outside to potty. I do have puppy pads all the floor outside her kennel in case of accidents. She is so small that she could also be fine with indoor potty pads.
It's important that Addie always has a leash/harness attached when she is not in her kennel and gated area. She is so fearful that when startled she will try to run away. I have a long lead on her so she can explore but not escape. Inside the house Addie is most comfortable in her open door kennel with a puppy play pen attached to it. She eats in the play pen area but only if I turn my back and move away. When I leave the room she will venture out into the play pen. When I return she has started giving a tiny little tag wag before retreating back into the kennel. Baby steps. Baby steps.
I do think Addie will be the sweetest little companion. It will just take the right person to help her get there.

Go meet their pets

The Bond Between's goal is to not keep any animals at our rescue office. The majority of our animals are living in foster homes until they are adopted. Occasionally, animals are living in our rescue office that are in need of a foster home.

If you would like to meet an animal at our office who needs a foster, please reach out to inofficeanimals@thebondbetween.org and fill out our foster interest form at https://www.thebondbetween.org/foster

More about this rescue

The Bond Between is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that focuses on the bond between humans and animals. We were founded in 2009 as Secondhand Hounds. Since then, we have rescued over 29,000 dogs and cats with the help of thousands of fosters, volunteers, and supporters in our community. Our organization has grown from a rescue to a first-in-its-class animal wellbeing organization... now The Bond Between! We continue to provide safe shelter, proper veterinary care, and daily necessities for animals while working hard to help them build a bond with humans. We also focus on supporting the bonds that already exist between people and pets with our pet food shelf, respite foster care program, and focus on social services.

We wake up every morning saying YES to connecting people and animals, caring for them, and helping them fill each other’s hearts.

You can help support us today by donating, fostering, volunteering, or sharing The Bond Between.
