My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Francis, who was likely named after Saint Francis, the patron Saint of animals! This poor sweetie was brought to ACCT on 6/22 after a member of the public observed him being thrown from a vehicle. Francis's finders kept him at their home for a week, and found that this sweet boy is fine around strangers and children, and ran away from their cat! They described him as friendly, cuddly, scared, quiet, and playful. On arrival, staff noted he had some facial injuries and hair loss, leading staff to believe that mace may have been used on him at some point :-(

Francis has piercing blue eyes and is strikingly handsome. He's had a good dog meet at the shelter and is incredibly sweet with staff and volunteers. He deserves a shot at a loving home!

Francis is eligible for rescue and adoption. Meet him at ACCT Philly any day of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or email foster@acctphilly.org to express interest in fostering him.

Behavior notes --
Per volunteer on 7/7: Francis approached me at his kennel door and was easily leashed to exit. Once outside, Francis wasn't too interested in exploring or sniffing grass. On such a hot and sunny day, Francis sought out the shade. After finding a cool spot to relax, Francis was most interested in getting pets from me or taking treats. He sits patiently for snacks and takes them gently. He found a shady spot under a bench and rolled onto his back for belly scratches and then onto his side for butt scratches. Francis loves being scratched and pet all over. I tossed a couple of balls, but Francis wasn't interested in playing with toys. He would just watch the ball roll across the run and then approach me for more attention or more treats or more time to rest in the shade. Francis is a very sweet boy. On our walk back, Francis did seem tense and was briefly jumpy as we approached the building. Then when we got back to his kennel, he was resistant and began pulling away. But once I stepped into his kennel and tossed a couple of treats in, Francis quickly entered the kennel. Francis was easy to walk and fun to spend time with.

Per volunteer on 7/4: Francis is wonderful! He hadn't been out with a volunteer in 4 days but he was so well-behaved considering that! He is so house-trained; I felt terrible for how many times he went when we got out! He ran around the play yard for a bit before soliciting attention from me. He took treats very gently from my hand after doing a nice sit. I saw a sign on his kennel that said he could get mouthy, which isn't surprising considering his age. He mouthed me twice but I was able to redirect him very easily with pepperoni. I had no issues returning him to his kennel. I was impressed by how snuggly he was too. I scratched both sides of his head and he melted into my arms. He's adorable and I just love him!

Per staff on 6/23: Very friendly and sweet. So tolerant of ear exam with open wound. Did get a little rambunctious with play, was easy to redirect but still 10+ due to energy with play. Got Francis out for an eval and realized his ear was bleeding pretty bad. I took him to the exam room to get patched up and he was SUCH a tolerant, good boy!! He allowed three strangers to handle his injuries, restrain him, and apply medicine to sensitive wounds, all with no issues! I could tell he was getting stressed, as his face was getting redder and redder, and he did a couple stress yawns, but never escalated and was a very good boy throughout!
