My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Have you been looking for a true lap dog full of love and devotion?  Meet Sassy May, b. May 2021.  She is  a combination of Chihuahua and Jack Russell Terrier and has true traits from both breeds.  Weighing in at just 11 lbs, she is a little dog in a big dog's body.  She can be feisty one minute and turning shy the next.  She is intelligent, fiercely loyal and protective of the ones she loves.  Like the flowers, she is starting to bloom and show her true personality.

Ever-changing, Sassy May is learning what dog life is all about.  Her daily walks and regular play time help offset her anxiety.  She suffers from separation anxiety and has a tendency to bark at unexpected noises, gives warning signs by growling and maybe getting a little nippy.  She also takes medication daily.  Sassy uses a harness to protect her delicate spine and windpipe.

Because of her anxiety, Sassy May will occasionally have an accident in the house, but is trying very hard to overcome this. Using hand signals and specific words, she is working on sharing her people, jumping, barking and socialization skills. Sassy May kennels well and likes to be tucked in at bedtime.  Sassy May is fully vetted with up to date shots, routine dental care and has been chipped.

The perfect home for Sassy May should be quiet.  She needs someone that is looking for a true lap dog.  Sassy thrives on attention and your touch. When outside, she should be tethered or on leash - a fenced yard would be best.  Even though she is tolerant of other dogs, she would be happier if she were the only dog.  Supervision around children is imperative.  She is not suitable for apartments and no cats.

If you would like to meet sweet Sassy May, please start the adoption process today!

The suggested adoption donation for Sassy May is $375, which includes a lifetime of free relationship-based training for any behavioral problems (not obedience training). Muddy Paws is a 501c3 non-profit organization meaning that part of your donation MAY be TAX DEDUCTIBLE. We are a 100% volunteer rescue committed to giving animals a second chance at life. All donations go toward that mission. Adoption fees are the primary source of funding for the cost of veterinary care for our animals.  In 2022 alone, we provided animal Healthcare totaling over $399,000 covered mainly through adoption fees.

Alter Agreement:  If the dog or cat you adopt is older than 6 months of age and not spayed or neutered, you will receive a voucher to alter the pet at Val Verde Animal Hospital or Omaha Animal Medical Group in Omaha, at no cost to you.  Or you can alter the pet at your own vet and be reimbursed $100 for dogs, and $50 for cats, of total cost.  If the dog or cat is younger than 6 months of age, the adopter will be responsible for the cost of altering the pet at the vet of their choice.  If proof of alter is received by Muddy Paws prior to the pet turning 6 months of age, a reimbursement of $100 for dogs, and $50 for cats, will be sent to you to help cover expenses.  All puppies and kittens MUST be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age.  All dogs and cats MUST be spayed or neutered no later than one month after adoption is finalized.

Information about the adoption process: All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION. Once your application has completed our prescreen steps, we will put you in touch with the animal’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match. If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the animal. The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver.

Please Note: We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter. We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks, and a Home Visit (Virtual in some cases)  during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each animal, based on the animal’s needs. If you and the animal are not a good match, we will help you select another animal, or we will keep your approved application on file for 6 months.

More about this rescue

Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue, Inc. is a not for profit organization formed in 2014 by a small group of devoted animal lovers, in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area, with many years of rescue experience wanting to make a difference in the lives of dogs. Our rescue focuses on small breed dogs, less than 35 pounds, of any age. It is all volunteer based, and all of our rescue dogs are living in the homes of our volunteers.
Our rescue is unique in that we offer supportive services, such as education and training, to owners considering relinquishing their pet in an effort to try to keep the dog in their home whenever possible. We also educate and offer placement assistance to owners attempting to rehome their pets through social media sites, which can often be risky for the pets as well as the owners.
