Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Dixie is a beautiful 12 month old, female, Labrador Retriever; we are unsure if she is mixed with another breed. What we DO know (unfortunately) is that Dixie had very neglectful owners who never cared for her properly, including taking her to a vet. She would often roam around looking for food and love. She had a litter of 11 puppies at only 10 months old. After 2 of the puppies died, Dixie started going downhill, suffering from malnutrition, fleas, double ear infections and overall weakness.
She tried her best to continue being the best momma she could. When her pups were 4 1/2 months old she experienced painful mastitis, leading to breast abscesses. Thankfully, a local business that gave Dixie food/water when she would stop by saw how sick she was and took her to the vet where she was hospitalized for nearly a week. When the owners were contacted to pick her up (and pay a bill), they decided to abandon her instead. Fortunately, Dixie came to our rescue and has been completely vetted, spayed, bathed, and has all her vaccines. She tested negative for heartworms and is on prevention meds. Dixie warms up quickly to women and kids but is cautious of men until they show her love and a gentle hand. Dixie’s fur was thin, dry and dull from all she went through but is improving daily. She is completely house trained, walks on a leash but needs to learn basic obedience commands. She wants to please you and instantly rolls over for tummy rubs. She also loves being brushed and getting treats.
She currently weighs 62lbs and is waiting for someone to give her a life of love and care. This poor soul has been through a lot in her very short life, but has a whole lifetime of love to give to the right family that will treat her with love kindness. She also makes an excellent watchdog, protecting her "peeps" like she did her babies!!!
At wags to riches, we pride ourselves on having the lowest prices of any rescue while doing the most for our dogs. Being a very small organization, we are a 2-woman show, have no overhead, and work hard to give our dogs the most loving home possible. Because we are so small with limited volunteers, we have to use an external transport company (if you don't want to drive to Alabama to get your dog( to transport the dog to Maryland/PA/VA area. He charges $150 per dog. This cost would be in addition to the adoption fee.
