Meet Reishi, a sweet, shy 10 month old neutered male dachshund mix, weighing about 25 lbs! Unlike his siblings, he has long legs, which is from the min pin mix in him per the DNA results from his siblings. He is full grown.
Reishi and his siblings were rescued from a hoarding case in TN. As a result, Reishi was not properly socialized as a young pup and the world is a scary place for him He is a nervous boy and he takes time to warm up to new people and situations, however he is super sweet and, once you have earned his trust, he will shower you with love! Reishi is a super love bug who LOVES to cuddle! He also loves to burrow under the blankets to get nice and cozy.
Reishi would do best in a quiet, calm home. He does best with women, it takes him longer to warm up to men (particularly large/loud men). However, he has done well with gentle, soft spoken men who are patient with him. He is very treat motivated and treats help him to warm up! He is more trusting of people with dogs. Reishi has made incredible progress in the 3 months he has been in his New England foster home, and we know he will continue to gain confidence and trust more easily with time.
Due to his timid nature, we recommend older kids 8+ who know to respect a dog's space, or no kids. Reishi is GREAT with dogs of all sizes (he seems to especially love bigger dogs), and he would love a dog sibling to help show him the ropes and make him feel safe! He is too interested in cats, so he is looking for a home with no feline friends.
From Reishi's current foster:
"Reishi has had a traumatic past, but he is a wonderful boy and just needs some patience and understanding to help him feel comfortable and safe. Sudden movements, close proximity, and eye contact when first meeting can be extremely threatening to him. This sometimes triggers a low bark, and sometimes a loud bark. Once he has deemed you as safe, he is able to manage all of these with no problem!
Once Reishi has deemed you a safe person, he is an incredibly happy, goofy, playful puppy. He aims to please, and seems to strongly connect to one owner. As scary as the world can be for him, he loves being outside, going on walks, and playing with soft squeaky toys. Reishi LOVES other dogs and gets along wonderfully with dogs of all sizes! He is a regular at the dog park and his personality just shines when he is off leash and able to run around with other dogs. This is where he feels most confident.
Reishi trusts people whom he sees being good to other dogs more easily. He could benefit from a family that has another dog.
He will require quite a bit of continued training, yet is a loving, beautiful soul who truly deserves a patient, safe home and has already made great progress in a short period of time."
