My name is Teddy!

Teddy arrived at MOGS from a high-kill shelter where he was on Death Row. He is proving to be a dog and people friendly boy, who is looking for his forever family to welcome him home!

TEMPERAMENT / BEHAVIOR /TRAINING

Teddy has been a very good guest in his foster home so far! He is doing well with his basic manners training. He likes to get pets without being overly clingy but is starting to explore this more. He realizes getting pets is wonderful! and is getting more snuggly and at times demanding for more through light mouthing but is currently working on this behavior.

Teddy initially would look for an exit plan out of the backyard, but that quickly stopped, and he has developed a solid recall already! He has not tried fence fighting with the neighbor's dogs but does like to go up to the fence and peek between the gaps to see what they are up to or if he can spot one of the cats.  He needs some more work on a leash, but he's not overly pully and so far, has only been using a flat collar.

Now that he's settled in his foster home and has gotten more comfortable, he has tried to mark furniture. He wears a belly band while he is inside the house while he works on this behavior. Other than this, he appears potty trained, having had no other accidents in the house.  He has done a little whining and a little howl when he first gets in his kennel, but he stops that quickly and then will just start up if he can hear his foster brothers going outside and he's still kenneled. He did tear up a bed in his kennel.

He's gotten two baths in his foster home; he doesn't love getting a bath but is very cooperative. He doesn't react to the high-velocity blower that dries his coat and will also allow good brushing.

Teddy has not shown any resources guarding with toys or food, and he is currently working on his basic manners, such as waiting patiently for his food. He tends to eat very fast, so his foster parents have implemented a slow feeding method.

For as GSD, Teddy has been a very quiet boy so far! He whines briefly in his kennel, hasn’t barked outside or even when someone is at the door. He has barked at his foster brother to let him know it is time to play!

OTHER ANIMALS

He gets along great with his pushy foster brother. He will play and has showed no signs of any aggression, even when his new friend has bothered him when he was trying to chill out.  

His foster family has not seen a super intense prey drive from him, more curiosity and alerting. He and a neighbor cat had a brief standoff, where he barked but came to his foster mom when she called him. He could be cat friendly but would need testing for any future family that also has cats. He likes to sniff around where the squirrels go in the backyard and will sit under the trees watching them jump around from branch to branch.

PEOPLE

His foster family thinks Teddy has great house manners overall! Like a typical GSD, he just wants to be near them, but not in an obsessive way.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

1. We're picky about our adopters. 
2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They 'mouth' and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.  
   
3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
   
5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up? 
   
6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
