My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

** $100 in pledges for the rescue that pulls **

Slim Jim ACCT-A-166745 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Slim Jim must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by Friday August 16th at 10 A.M. Should Slim Jim's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

While his name may be Slim Jim, his heart is anything but slim! Slim Jim was initially found as a stray on 6/15 and was brought to the shelter, where he has made new friends everywhere he goes! Slim Jim was briefly adopted but unfortunately the adopters didn't follow any decompression rules and introduced Slim Jim to all of the animals in the house immediately. When the animals didn't immediately get along, the adopters decided to surrender Slim Jim on 6/23. They told us that he is kind, loving, and energetic. On 7/12, he was adopted again, but came back as a police pickup on 7/24 and we were not able to get in contact with his owner, so he became available for adoption again. Slim Jim is a very affectionate boy who loves treats! He would love an owner to give him some structure and show him the ropes.

Behavior:
On 8/10 staff noted: Sweet boy. Loves to be outside. Pulls kind of hard because of excitement.

On 8/3 a volunteer noted: Very focused on dog in next play yard.

On 7/27 a volunteer noted: Pulls strong at first. Super friendly, chased toys but does not take possession. Perfect as always!

7/25 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray - abandoned

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Slim Jim greeted me in kennel with soft eyes and a wagging tail. He was very excited and started toe tapping and full body wiggling. He stayed put when I opened the door and reached in, and was easy to leash. He came flying out once secured so hold on tight! When returning to kennel Slim Jim pancaked a bit at the beginning of his row. I was able to keep him moving with some encouragement and leash pressure. He pancaked again outside of his kennel and refused to move. He allowed me to crouch down and try to comfort him, but I could see him getting increasingly stressed with all of the dogs reacting around him. He allowed me to use his harness to lift him into kennel without issue.

LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately to strongly, would benefit from a harness

HANDLING:
When we got to the eval room Slim Jim did some zoomies and went potty right away. He seems house trained! After he got his potties out he immediately picked up a toy and ran around the room happily. When I called him to me he came running right into me, leaning in hard for some pets with the toy still in his mouth. He allowed some all over love with no issues and ran off with his toy. He traded toys for treats and new toys easily. Slim Jim allowed all handling with no issues and was happy to get given attention and love. He is a friendly, playful boy that's just happy to get out and have someone give him the attention he needs!

PLAY:
Engages in play, likes to play with toys. Gets jumpy and a little mouthy with running around and playing, but stopped quickly when I turned my body away from him and refused to engage.

TOYS:
LOVES toys and play! Squeakers and soft toys are his favorite. He likes to shake and destroy his toys.

On 7/10 a volunteer noted:
Very good boy- we had an awesome outing! He knows sit and takes treats SOOO gently. He loves the treats. He is pretty strong on leash so would recommend a harness. He took pets and sought out affection from me with no handling issues. He was super playful! he picked up a stuffie on his own and was running around with it, then chased after any ball I threw. He really enjoyed romping around. Loves pets, very sweet boy! No interactions with other animals but there were a bunch of birds in the play run and he didn't pay any attention to them.

On 7/12 staff noted: He was stressed during his meet today and was fixated on everything but us humans. He was a little playful and gentle but you could tell there was a lot going on around him and it was hard for him to focus.

On 7/6 staff noted:
Slim Jim got out for some activity time today! In kennel he was sitting by the door, crying excitedly when he saw me. He was easy to leash and came right out. Slim Jim pulls HARD on leash, but when I showed him that I wasn't going to let him drag me, he pulled a bit less. He would still benefit from a harness or other walking aid. Unfortunately it was too hot to walk Slim Jim and take him to a yard to run, like I know he wanted to. Instead, we hung out in a patch of grass in the back. This area is an area where cats frequent, and Slim Jim was on the lookout for any cats. He was hypervigilant, looking in every nook and cranny for a cat. We did not see any thankfully, but based on this and previous owner notes, I don't think that Slim Jim would do well in a home with cats. When he wasn't looking for a cat, he was leaning into me and pushing in hard for attention and love. He is such a lovebug!! He almost knocked me over leaning in so hard! I did notice that he didn't like being pet too roughly, especially around his butt. When I would pet him too roughly he would head whip, but never escalated past just whipping around to say "what are you doing back there??". He was still very loving and friendly, just wants to be gently loved, not roughed up. When it was time to go inside Slim Jim wanted to stay out and run! He came inside and tried to pull, but when I didn't let him he walked much nicer back to kennel. He pancaked at the door and didn't want to return, but hopped in when I tossed some treats in for him! He got a big drink of water as I closed the door and walked away. Overall, Slim Jim is an energetic, loving boy that just needs a home without cats or small animals!

6/15 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
Slim Jim came running to the door and sat right down when he saw me. He had big soft eyes and a rapid wagging tail. He was patient for leashing and came running out once secured.
Pulls VERY strongly, would benefit from a harness or other walking aid.
Slim Jim came into the eval room with a loose body and crazy tail wags. Slim Jim has been very sweet and a social butterfly. Slim greeted the other handler and jumped up for hugs. Slim showed no interest in treats and took it but dropped them on the floor. He kept coming back to the handlers whining and pawing for attention. He showed his belly, posed for pictures, and jumped up like he was dancing. Slim gently mouths when excited but nothing too concerning. He allowed all handling and gave some intense tail wags. He is a very goofy and cute boy that LOVVEESSS to nibble and give face kisses.
Slim Jim bunny hops very high when the handler ran around the room.
Trades a toy for a toy

MEDICAL:
On 6/15 Slim Jim was found to be in relatively good health other than having hair loss all over his body and some bleeding on the left side of his face. During a vet exam on 6/16, Slim Jim was found to be a sweet and exuberant boy. He had crusty hair loss on his body and hair loss on his face which was diagnosed as demodectic mange by a skin scrape. He had a secondary skin infection as well, and ear infections in both ears. A growth on the left of his muzzle already appeared to be regressing and was likely a histiocytoma. There was another mass on the crown of his head. He was prescribed NexGard for the demodectic mange, clindamycin for his skin infection, and EKT otic ointment for his ear infections. He was neutered on 6/17.

Upon his return on 6/23, Slim Jim was noted to be bright, alert, and responsive, friendly, cheerful, and co-operative during his exam. He had a bit of redness in his eyes and minimal wax in his ears. He had missing hair patches on back and a bite puncture scabbed over on the left side of neck. On 6/24 he was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection due to having nasal discharge and was started on doxycycline. His PCR test was negative for all types of upper respiratory infections that we test for, so he only needed a brief course of medication.

When he came back again on 7/25, he appeared healthy overall, with no remaining concerns regarding his eyes, nose, or skin.

Due to the concerns about his behavior towards cats, Slim Jim will need to go to a home without any cats or small animals. He has had good dogs meets at the shelter, so has the potential to live with another dog after decompression and a slow introductory period, but would also be perfectly happy being the center of attention! He is a playful and energetic dog, so will need a lot of exercise and enrichment. He also loves to play with toys!
