Hi there!
My name is Hershel. I’m 6 years old, neutered and house trained male. I get along with most other dogs; I would be fine as an only dog but preferably would have some other dog siblings to keep me company. I am crate trained (though I don’t like it very much). I am a bit of a chunky beagle (in part because of my Cushings disease – more below). My fosters are working on getting my weight down to a healthy number. I am very food motivated and know a few tricks such as sit and speak. I sleep well through the night and have a very friendly disposition.
I am a bit of a food thief, so you shouldn’t leave human food unattended around me. Like most beagles, I am a howler. For this reason, an apartment or townhouse is not recommended as I like to sing the song of my people quite often (and loudly). I would do best with non-aggressive/non-territorial K9 siblings. I am a very good boy, but have shown some food and toy aggression in the past towards other dogs. I’ve never been tested around cats. I have never shown any aggression to humans though, and I should be fine in a house with children.
I was surrendered by my previous owners to a shelter in northern Ohio for unknown reasons. I was recently diagnosed with Cushings disease. This means I have an overproduction of cortisol by the adrenal or pituitary glands. I will have this for the rest of my life, but my symptoms are controlled with a daily pill of Vetoryl. My new owners will need to give me my pill daily. This cost about $60-75 a month and I will also need blood tests twice a year to check that my dosage is correct. Dogs with Cushings disease tend be pot-bellied, drink and urinate more than other dogs, and sadly this can cause a decrease in over-all life expectancy.
I really am a sweet and well-mannered beagle. Although I know my Cushings means I’ll have to find just the right family – the search starts right here! If you think you might be interested in adoption, please click the link below! Or email the rescue directly at FHBRinfo@gmail.com.
