Give a big 'hello' to Sai!
This handsome pup came to AHS in November 2023 after his owners were no longer able to keep him. Unfortunately, Sai has really struggled in the kennel environment and has spent some extra time with staff to help build his confidence when meeting and interacting with new people. While he has come a long way compared to his initial behavior with us, Sai will need an experienced owner to help him flourish into the wonderful dog that staff knows him to be! At this time we would recommend Sai go to a woman-only home unless it is a potential adopter willing to put in the time and patience needed for Sai to live in a home with a man. Sai is very capable of bonding with men and has made plenty of friends with male staff and volunteers when one-on-one or with proper introductions. We have noticed that Sai tends to become very protective over the women he bonds with and is receiving ongoing training to help with these behaviors when he is out-and-about in public settings.
When Sai has crossed that bridge into being comfortable with someone he turns into one of the goofiest and cuddliest boys around. Do not let his size fool you, Sai definitely thinks of himself as quite the lap dog! Between leaning against you and getting scratches or sitting in your lap for a cuddle, Sai loves to be as close as possible to his human friends. In addition to his confidence building, Sai has also been working on his obedience training. Sai currently knows 'sit', 'wait', 'leave it' and 'be nice' as a reminder when he is meeting someone new. He is still working on his leash manners but is walking more and more politely with only a couple reminders here and there. Car rides are no big deal to him and he rides wonderfully, especially on days when he gets to go and have an adventure outdoors! This pup has plenty of energy to go around and enjoys spending his time exploring the outdoors and romping around the yard with his favorite stuffy or rope toys.
Sai previously lived in a home with another male dog and has been respectful of the other dogs in the kennel. He would need a meet-and-greet with any potential doggy pals in his forever home. He has also done well with the tween age children he has met and could potentially live in a home with a young human companion as well. When he first came to us cats were a big 'no' in Sai's book but he has been working hard with staff to not bother them and can be near them with supervision. We would recommend he go into a cat-free home unless it is someone who has the experience required to safely integrate him into a home with cats.
Staff knows how wonderful of a dog Sai can be when given enough time and structure and we would love to see him find a home that will truly allow to be the amazing dog we know he can be! If you are potentially interested in being that home for Sai, contact us today!
