Meet Smith Island, a petite and gentle soul who was found wandering the streets, frightened and alone. When she arrived at our shelter, she was both hungry and understandably scared. Over time, Smith Island has started to find her footing and is learning that humans can be friends rather than something to fear. She now enjoys romping around in our shelter dog playgroups and splashing in the pool, and loves spending time with her people. While she may be a little slow to warm up, once she's comfortable with you, there is no such thing as personal space.
Smith Island would thrive in an older-children home where her new family can understand her scared dog body language, going slow and earning her trust, and when she does open up, be able to match her energy and keep up. The Maryland SPCA connects wonderful pets to loving owners. We are not affiliated with any national animal organization, and we do not receive any government or United Way funding. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and neglect of animals through fostering the humane relationship between animals and people. We operate primarily in the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan area.
To make sure that our dogs and cats do not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem, every one is spayed or neutered before going into a new home. The cost is included in the adoption fee, as are the costs of shots and other necessary care. In addition, a free Positive Pooch class is available to our dog adopters.
There is no set time limit for how long an animal can remain in our adoption program. As long as an animal maintains general good health and a sound temperament, we keep him or her until adopted. We pride ourselves on providing premium care to the animals in a clean, pleasant environment. Our adoption staff works diligently to pair up adopters with the best animal match for their homes and lifestyles.
We transport animals from other shelters to our adoption center to help more animals get adopted. We also help pet owners find new homes for their pets so their animals don’t need to enter shelter care.
